In the present, a delayed gift from Helen—a Theragun massager—arrives. Carol tells the Others not to mention Helen again and pushes back against their efforts to anticipate what she needs. When she tries to shop at her usual grocery store, she finds it empty. She orders the Others to restock it, and they comply. Later, they explain that they have switched off lights they consider unnecessary.
Angry at their intervention, Carol sarcastically says, “There is nothing wrong with me that a fucking hand grenade wouldn’t fix.” The Others take the possibility seriously: Zosia brings her a real grenade.

Why does Zosia bring Carol a real grenade?
The Others appear to treat Carol’s remark as a request rather than recognizing it as sarcasm. After drinking, Carol handles the grenade and pulls its pin. Zosia throws it out through a window and shields Carol from the blast. The explosion damages the house and injures Zosia.
Carol takes Zosia to the hospital. Zosia survives, and the incident leaves Carol with a more consequential question: how far will the Others go to satisfy her?

What does Carol discover in the ending?
At the hospital, Carol tests the Others by asking whether they would get her another grenade, then escalating to a rocket, a tank, and an atom bomb. The worker hesitates at the last request, but the exchange ultimately suggests that the Others would comply, even though they would not feel good about doing so.
That is Carol’s discovery: her requests may give her leverage over the collective because the Others seem to have difficulty refusing her. The scene does not establish that they can undo the Joining, that Carol will ask them to, or that such a request would succeed. Those remain possibilities beyond what this episode confirms.

What the grenade means for Carol and the Others
The episode’s danger comes from a mismatch: Carol speaks with anger and sarcasm, while the Others respond with literal, relentless accommodation. Their willingness to meet her stated needs does not come with ordinary judgment about whether a request is a joke or whether fulfilling it could hurt someone.
That dynamic also makes Carol’s anger feel like more than a reaction to the Others’ policies. Vulture reads it as a way of displacing or avoiding other feelings, particularly grief. That is a critical interpretation, not a confirmed statement of creator intent; the episode’s contrast between Carol’s defensiveness and the Others’ literal-minded helpfulness supports the reading.
