Yes—Plex’s redesigned app is real, but it was never a single, simultaneous launch. The new experience began reaching Android and iOS users on March 31, 2025, while TV platforms followed in stages. Plex was still rolling out the updated interface to Amazon Fire TV in April 2026, and mobile releases continued receiving changes in June 2026.
The redesign changes the Plex client experience, not Plex Media Server itself. It combines personal libraries with Plex’s free, ad-supported catalog, Live TV, discovery and social features, while Plex moves music and photos toward separate companion apps.
What Plex redesigned
Plex is rebuilding the apps people use to browse and play media. The stated goal is a more unified, visual experience for personal movies and shows, Plex’s own on-demand catalog, free Live TV, recommendations and community activity. Plex previewed the design as a “seamless interface” spanning those categories (Plex’s announcement).
This is a client redesign. Your libraries, metadata and server remain on Plex Media Server. What changes is how a phone, streaming stick or television presents them.

See Plex’s focused-app strategy, mobile rollout notice and Fire TV announcement for the original dates. Plex commonly stages app releases, so two devices in the same home may show different interfaces for days or weeks.
Which devices have the new experience?
- Android and iOS: Public rollout began March 31, 2025.
- Apple TV: Preview testing expanded in January 2025.
- Roku and smart TVs: Plex said the experience had reached these platforms before the later Fire TV rollout, although availability can vary by model and app version.
- Amazon Fire TV: Rollout began in stages in April 2026.
Other big-screen clients can differ by operating system, hardware model and release channel. Plex’s guides to big-screen navigation and app customization are the best way to check current controls.
What users will notice
The home screen is more discovery-oriented and makes greater use of artwork. Personal libraries appear alongside Plex’s free movies, shows and Live TV, rather than existing as an entirely separate universe. Navigation, library presentation and content-detail pages have been revised, and later updates changed downloads, casting, metadata actions, library scanning and settings.

Plex’s mobile release history shows an iterative process: options to hide Live TV when no source exists, redesigned downloaded-item menus, refreshed movie and show pages and ongoing casting fixes were added over time (mobile release notes).
Plex describes the redesign as faster and more intuitive, but those are product goals, not independent performance measurements. A more visual interface may suit viewers who browse by artwork while feeling less efficient to people who prefer compact lists and immediate access to a personal library.

Why music and photos are moving out of the main app
Plex says the primary app is being concentrated on movies, shows, Live TV, discovery and community features. Music is moving toward Plexamp, and photos toward Plex Photos.
In its strategy announcement, Plex said music playback was used by about 2.5% of its users and photo access by about 0.2% monthly. Those are Plex’s own usage figures, not an independent audit. The practical result is a clearer video focus but more app switching for households that used Plex as one place for video, music and photos. Plex announced a transition away from music and photo playback in the main mobile app; exact behavior still depends on platform and version.

Server and app requirements
For the launch-era mobile redesign, Plex documented Plex Media Server 1.41.2 or later as necessary for full support (source). That should not be treated as the universal minimum for every client in 2026; current app releases can impose newer requirements.
- Update the client through the device’s app store.
- Update Plex Media Server from the official Downloads page.
- Restart the server and client if libraries, artwork or navigation look incomplete.
- Confirm the server is signed in and reachable.
- Check whether the device is running a preview build or the stable app.
Why you may not see it yet
- Your device or model has not reached its staged rollout.
- The app-store update is delayed.
- You are using an older or unsupported client.
- Your server software is below the documented requirement.
- The new design is visible on your phone but not yet on your television.
- A cached or incomplete update is preserving old navigation.
Plex says releases can take several days to reach everyone. Update first, then compare another supported device before assuming the feature is missing from your account.
The remote-streaming change is separate
The redesign and Plex’s remote-viewing policy changes arrived in the same broad period, but they are different decisions. The interface does not itself require Plex Pass.

Under Plex’s current policy, local playback of personal video remains free. Remote playback of personal video generally requires one of the following:

- Plex Pass on the viewing account; or
- Remote Watch Pass on the viewing account.
A server owner’s Plex Pass generally covers other accounts accessing that server remotely. Remote Watch Pass is narrower: it covers remote personal-media playback for the purchasing account, with a managed-account exception, and does not include the wider Plex Pass feature set. It does not apply to music streaming in Plexamp or photo viewing in Plex Photos (Remote Watch Pass rules).
When remote playback fails after a TV update, distinguish an app problem from an entitlement problem. Check whether the account is local or remote, who administers the server and which pass, if any, is attached to that account.

Plex announced that the price for a new Lifetime Plex Pass became $749.99 USD on July 1, 2026, at 12:01 a.m. UTC. Existing lifetime subscribers keep their benefits. Plex said monthly and annual Plex Pass prices were unchanged in that announcement; the surfaced U.S. plan page lists $6.99 per month and $69.99 per year, but region, promotion and app-store billing can change the amount.
Remote Watch Pass introductory U.S. prices ended before June 1, 2026. The stated standard renewal rates were $2.99 per month or $29.99 per year. Check Plex’s live plan page for the price and currency shown for your account.

For local-only viewing, the redesigned app, Plex Media Server and Plex’s ad-supported catalog remain usable without Plex Pass. Paying becomes a question of remote access and premium server features, not access to the redesign itself.
Should you stay with Plex?
Stay with Plex if broad device support, straightforward sharing and an integrated discovery catalog matter more than having a compact library-first interface. Expect a stronger emphasis on Plex’s own services and separate apps for music and photos.
Consider Jellyfin if open-source software, self-hosting and avoiding Plex subscriptions are priorities. It offers more control but can require more hands-on setup and may have less uniform client polish across devices (official site).
Consider Emby if you want another commercial self-hosted ecosystem with a premium tier and features such as mobile downloads (Premiere documentation).

Bottom line
Plex’s big redesign is genuine and still evolving. Update the app and server, but judge availability by device rather than by the headline. The key trade-offs are a more discovery-heavy video interface, separate music and photo apps, staged platform support and a remote-streaming policy that can add cost. Whether to wait, pay or switch depends less on the redesign itself than on your devices, remote-viewing needs and tolerance for Plex’s new direction.
