Plex users reported a real blank- or grey-screen problem after Plex for Mac updated to version 1.44.0 in May 2022. Reports clustered around Mac Pro systems with AMD graphics, and the most useful reported workaround was to disable GPU rendering in the desktop app’s configuration file. This is a historical Mac-player issue, not evidence that Plex is currently experiencing a service outage.
What the blank-screen problem looked like
In reports from May 2022, Plex for Mac showed its splash screen and then opened to a plain grey or blank window. The library interface did not load: users could not see menus, buttons, icons, or other usable controls. This was more than a playback problem, because the app’s interface itself was unavailable.
Some users said reinstalling the app did not resolve the window. Reports describe the issue beginning after an automatic player update. Users also described the grey screen as having no menu after launch.

How to tell whether the Mac app or server is at fault
Test the same Plex account and library in Plex Web or another Plex client. Users in the incident discussion reported that their server and libraries remained usable on browsers and other devices while the native Mac app displayed the blank interface. If another client works, start with the Mac player rather than rebuilding libraries, changing server permissions, or rescanning media.

The reports identified the player version separately from the Plex Media Server version, and updating the server did not resolve the Mac-only interface failure. That pattern points to a local desktop-client rendering problem; it does not establish that every blank Plex window has the same cause.
Which version and Macs were reported?
The main incident thread began in early May 2022, after users updated to Plex for Mac build 1.44.0.2981-e2d72ac2. Reports continued for some users on 1.45.0.3013-1676042f and later builds, so moving to the next release did not resolve every reported case.

These are patterns in user reports, not a complete compatibility list. They do not show that every AMD-equipped Mac, every Intel Mac, or every macOS release was affected. The discussion suggests an interaction between AMD graphics and rendering of the desktop interface, but does not establish a formal root-cause analysis. The incident thread contains the original version and hardware reports.

First workaround: disable GPU rendering in Plex for Mac
A Plex forum representative suggested adding disableGPU=1 to the main Plex for Mac app’s configuration. Users reported that this restored the interface on affected systems. The advice came through a community forum, not a current formal support article, so treat it as a workaround rather than a guaranteed fix.
Before editing: Quit Plex and make a copy of the configuration file. Edit only the user-level Plex for Mac configuration described below; the forum does not establish that this applies to other Plex clients.
- Quit Plex completely.
- In Finder, choose Go → Go to Folder…, or press Shift–Command–G.
- Enter
~/Library/Application Support/Plexand press Return. This is the current user’s Library folder, not the system-wide/Library. - Make a backup copy of
plex.ini. - Open the original
plex.iniin a plain-text editor. Under its[General]section, adddisableGPU=1, near the existingVersion=1line if present. For example:[General] Version=1 disableGPU=1 - Save the file and relaunch Plex.
The forum explanation said this setting should affect interface rendering rather than media playback, but that is a reported expectation, not a guarantee for every Mac or release. The follow-up discussion includes the GPU-setting suggestion.

If you cannot find plex.ini
Check the exact path ~/Library/Application Support/Plex/plex.ini, and make sure you used the account’s Library folder. If Plex can be launched, open it once and check again in case its support files have not yet been created. Back up the whole Plex support folder before creating or changing configuration files. Do not create an arbitrary plex.ini for Plex HTPC or another client; the reported workaround concerns Plex for Mac.

Use this as a later step, not the first one. The incident thread lists the following local Plex for Mac locations:
~/Library/Application Support/Plex/~/Library/Caches/Plex/~/Library/Preferences/tv.plex.Plex.plist
Changing or removing these can clear local application state, cached data, preferences, and sign-in information. Quit Plex, then rename the relevant folders or file rather than deleting them—for example, to Plex.old and tv.plex.Plex.plist.old. Relaunch Plex to test with fresh local files. If this does not help, quit Plex and restore the originals. Reinstalling the application by itself did not resolve several reports, so a reinstall is not a substitute for diagnosing the local configuration.

Downgrading: use only an installer you can trust
Some affected users reported that returning to 1.43.4.2971-aa2133cc restored operation. The installer links discussed in the forum were user-hosted, not clearly official Plex distribution links. Do not download an old app from an unknown mirror or treat a forum attachment as verified.
If you have a known-good Time Machine backup or can obtain the installer from a verified official Plex archive, downgrading may be an option when the interface is unusable and the GPU workaround fails. Older software can have security or compatibility defects, and automatic updating may replace it. Plex’s downloads page is an official source for Plex downloads, but its existence does not establish that it provides this particular historical Mac player build.

disableUpdater=trueThat is a forum-reported setting, not an officially documented update policy. Disabling updates can prevent an unwanted build from returning, but it also prevents the app from receiving security fixes, bug fixes, and compatibility updates. Use it only if you understand that trade-off and can manage updates deliberately; remove the setting when you are ready to resume updating.
Plex HTPC is a different client
Do not assume the Plex for Mac configuration change fixes Plex HTPC. A Plex representative in the incident discussion said HTPC relied more heavily on Chromium for its interface and that disableGPU=1 did not reliably solve its grey-screen reports. The configuration advice above is specifically for the main Plex for Mac desktop app.
What to send Plex Support if the screen remains blank
- Check whether Plex Web at app.plex.tv/desktop and another Plex client can reach the same library.
- Test another Mac user account if available, and note whether the problem is limited to one account.
- Record the exact Plex player build, macOS version, Mac model, and graphics hardware. The reported logs location is
~/Library/Logs/Plex/. - Share those details and relevant logs with Plex Support or in the incident discussion. Do not post account credentials or private tokens.

Is this a current Plex outage?
The central reports date to May 2022 and concern specific Plex for Mac builds and hardware patterns. They do not show that version 1.44.0 is a current 2026 release or that all Mac users are affected now. If a Mac app is blank today, compare its exact version with these historical reports and test another client before applying old-version fixes.
