Pixar in a Box is a free online curriculum from Pixar Animation Studios and Khan Academy that shows how math, science and the arts connect to filmmaking. What is Pixar in a Box?
Pixar in a Box is a collaboration between Pixar Animation Studios and Khan Academy. Pixar describes it as a series of tutorials showing how school subjects such as math, science and the arts contribute to the everyday work of making films. Khan Academy’s original announcement called it a free online curriculum created with support from Disney.
The idea is to connect familiar academic concepts with creative and technical filmmaking problems. Examples include using combinatorics to think about WALL•E robot swarms, parabolic arcs in the design of grass in Brave, weighted averages in turning simple models into realistic characters, and geometric transformations for film sets. The course is an introduction to these connections, not a professional qualification.
Is Pixar in a Box free?
Yes. Khan Academy’s original announcement describes Pixar in a Box as free, and its Help Center says the platform’s library of lessons is free for anyone. How does the animation unit work?
The animation unit introduces animation as a sequence of images and uses animation curves to explain how movement changes over time. Learners use Khan Academy’s online animation tools in an activity to animate a bouncing ball. The lesson list also covers straight-ahead animation, linear interpolation, Bezier curves, squash and stretch, and a hands-on activity involving Luxo Jr.
A companion math lesson explores linear interpolation and Bezier curves, including de Casteljau’s algorithm. These ideas help describe how an object moves between positions; the interactive activity gives learners a way to see the concepts in practice.

Who is the course for, and how long do lessons take?
Khan Academy labels its introductory animation lesson appropriate for all ages and estimates 45–60 minutes to complete. The separate mathematics-of-animation-curves lesson is aimed at grade eight through high school, with an estimated duration of 30–40 minutes. These are lesson time estimates, not guarantees of mastery; the course listing does not claim to prepare learners for professional work or provide a credential.
Can I learn animation from Pixar and Khan Academy?
You can learn introductory ideas and try a guided animation activity. The bouncing-ball exercise offers a concrete first step, while the broader curriculum helps explain how creative choices interact with math and technology across a production. The official course materials do not establish that completing the lessons is equivalent to a structured professional animation program or sufficient career training.

Do you need special equipment?
The animation activity uses Khan Academy’s own online tools. The reviewed course pages do not identify a drawing tablet, paid software license, book or other physical product as necessary to participate.
