A May 3 update from his family and fundraiser organizer said he was awake, alert, and able to speak. The available reports do not establish his health or recovery after that date.
What happened at PNC Park
During the seventh inning of the April 30, 2025 Pirates-Cubs game, Markwood fell from the Clemente Wall in right field onto the warning track. The Associated Press described the wall as 21 feet high. Players and medical personnel responded, and Markwood was transported to Allegheny General Hospital in critical condition, according to The Associated Press.
Pittsburgh Public Safety said the incident was “being treated as accidental in nature,” as quoted by AP. That is the official characterization reported at the time; it does not establish a detailed account of how the fall occurred.
Who was Kavan Markwood?
AP reported that Markwood was 20 and had graduated from South Allegheny in 2022. The school district described him as a former student and standout athlete. District Workforce Development Coordinator Laura Thomson said, “The South Allegheny School District is keeping former student and standout athlete Kavan Markwood in our thoughts and prayers.”

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What was reported about the wall and railing?
AP reported the Clemente Wall’s height as 21 feet. It also quoted Pirates vice president of communications Brian Warecki on a 36-inch railing and a 26-inch code requirement. Those measurements and the comparison are attributed to the team official; they are not an independent assessment of building-code compliance or stadium safety.
