Phish performed “Evolve” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on July 11, 2024. The Aerosmith connection came in a separate cold-open sketch: Phish, Fallon and members of The Roots sang an a cappella spoof of “Love in an Elevator,” changing the refrain to “Phish in an Elevator.”
What Phish performed on Fallon
“Evolve” was the episode’s featured Phish performance. The band did not perform Aerosmith’s song as its musical number; “Love in an Elevator” was the source of the earlier comedy sketch. Phish.net’s setlist for the July 11 episode records “Evolve” as the performance.

How the Aerosmith bit worked
In the cold open, Phish joined Jimmy Fallon, Questlove and Black Thought for an a cappella take on Aerosmith’s “Love in an Elevator.” The sketch’s “Phish in an Elevator” refrain turned the song title into the joke. JamBase’s July 12, 2024 account also distinguishes the cold open from the band’s “Evolve” performance.
The performance came just before the album release
The episode aired July 11, 2024; Phish’s album Evolve was released the next day, July 12. The band’s release announcement describes it as Phish’s 16th studio album, issued on JEMP Records/ATO in digital, CD and double-LP vinyl formats.
#1 Best Overall
The album was recorded in fall 2023 at the band’s Vermont studio, The Barn, with producers Vance Powell and Bryce Goggin. The announcement also noted an Evolve merchandise range through Phish Dry Goods at release; it does not establish current stock or availability.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.“Evolve” predates the album
The song had an earlier release as a Trey Anastasio solo track on Lonely Trip, issued July 31, 2020. Phish.net’s “Evolve” song history records Phish’s live debut of the song on August 4, 2021.
That history also notes that Page McConnell attributed a half-step change in the song’s key to a July 12, 2023 performance. That is background on the song’s live history, not evidence about the arrangement used on Fallon.
