The five bars in a June 2023 PerthNow shortlist are useful leads, not a verified current ranking; newer official listings point to 399 Bar for Sunday board games, while Holy Grounds and local gaming groups suit daytime or scheduled play.
What to know before choosing a Perth board-game spot
Perth’s winter falls in the Southern Hemisphere’s June-to-August season. The venues below are not described as winter-only destinations; they are options to consider when wet weather makes an indoor meet-up appealing. The older bar shortlist comes from Belle Taylor’s PerthNow article published June 3, 2023, and its descriptions should be treated as dated rather than confirmation of current hours, game access or operating status.
Before setting out, check the venue’s current hours and booking requirements, then ask whether it lends games or permits guests to bring their own. A bar that welcomes a casual card game is not necessarily equipped for a long board-game session, and an arcade offers a different kind of play.
Bars from the 2023 shortlist: useful leads, not a current ranking
PerthNow’s original article named five bars and briefly described their appeal. The table preserves those leads while making clear what the article did—and did not—establish. It does not confirm that the venues still offer games or the same experience.

| Venue | Area | What the 2023 article said | What to check now |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mrs Brown Bar | North Fremantle | Described as cozy, with a fireplace; the article said Flipside burgers could be brought in from next door. | Current status, whether outside food is allowed, and whether games may be brought or borrowed. |
| Bark | Subiaco | The article mentioned Uno and Wednesday jazz from 7–9pm. | Whether games and the jazz schedule remain available, plus current hours and bookings. |
| The Indian Ocean Hotel | Scarborough | The article described a relaxed atmosphere and a stack of games. | Whether tabletop games are still available and any rules for using them. |
| The Moon | Northbridge | The article suggested bringing Scrabble or Settlers of Catan and described booths, food and late hours at that time. | Current hours, seating, and permission to play a brought game. Do not rely on the old closing-time description. |
| Rodney’s Bait ’n Tackle | Mosman Park | The article suggested cards or Scrabble, particularly midweek, and said weekends could be busy. | Current game policy, bookings and crowd conditions; the old observation is not a present-day guarantee. |
The same article mentioned Samson’s Paddock as a nearby alternative to Rodney’s, but did not establish a board-game policy there. These locations are best approached as places to contact and confirm, rather than as assured game venues.

Consult the listing for hours and current visit details. Visit Perth: Palace Arcade
Daytime and community options

Holy Grounds is a café rather than an evening bar. Visit Perth lists free Board at Lunch sessions every Wednesday from 11am to 2pm at Level One, 3 Pier Street, Perth. Meeples, Decks & Dice describes around 300 games available to play at a meet. That is an approximate club-reported library size, not an independently audited count, and the website is undated.
