Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba is a twist-heavy romantic thriller that makes its fugitives’ increasingly complicated escape the main attraction—and the main risk. Its schemes can be entertaining pulp, but viewers who need every turn to follow tight cause and effect may find the plotting overworked. The 2024 sequel premiered on Netflix on August 9, 2024.
What is Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba about?
The sequel picks up with Rani and Rishu hiding from the police in Agra and trying to get away. The arrival of Abhimanyu and the involvement of investigator Montu complicate their plans, setting up a romantic-thriller plot built around secrets, shifting motives and reversals.
Taapsee Pannu and Vikrant Massey return as Rani and Rishu. Sunny Kaushal joins the cast as Abhimanyu, while Jimmy Shergill plays investigator Montu. Jayprad Desai directed the film; Kanika Dhillon wrote and co-produced it.
Does the twist-heavy plotting work?
The film’s central appeal is its escalating game of schemes: characters conceal what they want, plans collide, and the story keeps introducing new complications. Netflix’s promotional material describes it as suspenseful and twist-filled; those are marketing claims, but they point to the kind of ride the film is aiming for.

That approach is also where the sequel risks becoming too clever by half. If you enjoy heightened, pulpy plotting, the reversals can keep the escape story lively. If you want every decision and reveal to feel tightly earned, the accumulating contrivances may pull you out of the suspense. That is a critical interpretation of the film’s storytelling, not a measured audience verdict.
What did reviewers and viewers say?
The available professional-review evidence is limited. An Indian Express review excerpt, dated August 10, 2024 and reproduced in a Jammu University-hosted newspaper PDF, awarded the film three stars. It described the film as entering “grown-up, amoral romance territory” and noted how quickly it establishes that Rani and Rishu remain fugitives. This is one review, not evidence of a wider critical consensus.

Online viewer comments are mixed and anecdotal. Retrieved discussions include complaints about the screenplay’s tightness and the second half, as well as a viewer who found it entertaining when not questioning its logic. Those self-selected comments can illustrate the split the plotting may create, but they cannot establish what audiences generally think. No reliable audience score or viewership figure is established here.
How does it compare with the first film?
This is a direct sequel, continuing Rani and Rishu’s story rather than beginning an unrelated mystery. The useful comparison is whether the new Agra fugitive plot develops their relationship and sustains tension through its reversals. The available facts establish the continuity and premise, but do not support a claim that either film is objectively better; whether this one works for you depends largely on your tolerance for elaborate plotting.
