Phil Everly, one half of the Everly Brothers, died on January 3, 2014, at age 74, after complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). With his older brother Don, he helped shape rock and roll through a close harmony rooted in country music and heard by generations of later performers.

Who was Phil Everly?

Born in Chicago on January 19, 1939, Phil was the son of musicians Ike and Margaret Everly. He and Don began singing on their parents’ radio show in Iowa. After the family moved through the South and Midwest and settled in Nashville, the brothers developed a sound that joined country brother harmony with elements of folk and bluegrass.

In the duo’s usual arrangement, Don carried the lower melody while Phil sang harmony above it. Phil also wrote songs, including “When Will I Be Loved”; Don wrote “Cathy’s Clown.” Their close blend—not simply a pair of voices singing together—became the defining feature of their records.

How did the Everly Brothers become famous?

The brothers broke through in 1957 with “Bye Bye Love,” written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant. It reached No. 2 on the pop charts, according to the Los Angeles Times obituary. They followed it with songs including “Wake Up Little Susie,” “All I Have to Do Is Dream,” “Bird Dog,” “Cathy’s Clown,” and “When Will I Be Loved.” The Recording Academy reports that the duo had 15 Top 10 singles, including No. 1 hits “All I Have to Do Is Dream” and “Bird Dog.”

The Recording Academy also notes that “Bye Bye Love” entered the GRAMMY Hall Of Fame in 1998 and “All I Have to Do Is Dream” in 2004. Those honors recognize the recordings’ lasting significance, distinct from the brothers’ own career awards.

Why did their harmonies matter to later musicians?

The Everly Brothers’ country-rooted blend became a model for artists working in rock and pop. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame identifies the Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel among those influenced by the duo; the Recording Academy also names the Beach Boys and the Byrds. In the Hall’s induction essay, Neil Young recalled, “We used to listen to the records over and over.”

Other musicians described the quality they heard in the brothers’ voices. Linda Ronstadt told the Los Angeles Times, “They had that sibling sound.” Chris Hillman, a founding member of the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers, said, “What beautiful music Phil and Don Everly gave us.” The Country Music Hall of Fame’s profile quotes historian Colin Escott: “The Everly Brothers took the country brother duet a step beyond their predecessors.”

What happened between the brothers, and when did they reunite?

Their partnership included a long break. The Country Music Hall of Fame records that the brothers split in July 1973 during a performance at Knott’s Berry Farm. They reunited in September 1983 for a live concert album and resumed performing and recording, including concerts at London’s Royal Albert Hall and later studio work.
