Contemporary coverage described increasingly vivid hallucinations and delusions, but it does not establish that the stunt left him with a lasting mental illness. The documented story is a disturbing account of severe acute effects—not proof that Tripp was permanently “driven crazy.”
What happened during Peter Tripp’s wakeathon?
Tripp, a disc jockey at New York station WMGM, undertook the sleep-deprivation stunt in January 1959. He broadcast from a Times Square booth while raising money for the March of Dimes. Psychiatrists and psychologists monitored him and collected data, making the event both a public spectacle and an observation of prolonged wakefulness.
TIME’s contemporaneous account reported that “Hallucinations became progressively more vivid.” As the hours passed, coverage described delusions involving the event and his surroundings. After Tripp reached the 200-hour mark, researchers kept him awake for another hour of tests. He then slept for 13 hours while monitoring continued. Those details come from TIME’s February 9, 1959 report: “The Inner World of Peter Tripp”.
Did the stunt make him permanently mentally ill?
The available accounts establish severe symptoms during the wakeathon; they do not prove that it caused lasting psychological harm. A 2014 Gizmodo retrospective discusses claims that Tripp was permanently affected, while also offering an alternative explanation for some later difficulties: “The Radio DJ Who Stayed Awake for 200 Hours and Went Crazy”. Accounts of later problems in someone’s personal or professional life do not, on their own, establish that sleep deprivation caused them.

It would also be a mistake to diagnose Tripp retrospectively from newspaper descriptions. The reports are evidence of what observers said happened during an extreme episode, not a complete medical record or proof of a long-term outcome.
Why can prolonged wakefulness cause hallucinations?
Tripp’s experience fits a broader pattern described in sleep-loss research, though one person’s episode cannot predict precisely what will happen to another. A 2018 systematic review examined 21 studies involving sleep-loss durations ranging from 24 hours to 11 nights. Perceptual changes appeared in nearly all the included studies. The review described a general progression: distortions and mood changes could give way to hallucinations, disordered thinking and delusions as time awake increased. The authors also said the evidence was insufficient to determine how much sleep is needed for full recovery or which factors account for lingering symptoms in some cases. Sleep deprivation is a health risk, not an endurance challenge
The historical interest of Tripp’s broadcast should not obscure its risks or turn it into a challenge to reproduce. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health lists disturbed mood, gastrointestinal symptoms, headaches and joint pain, disruption to blood-sugar and insulin systems, high blood pressure, seizures and hallucinations among possible effects of sleep deprivation. Its overview is available from NIOSH.
The Tripp story is best understood in two parts: contemporary reporting documented acute psychological symptoms after extreme wakefulness, while the available evidence does not settle whether the event caused lasting harm. That distinction matters when recounting a compelling episode without turning an uncertain aftermath into a diagnosis.
