Peter Greste’s work as a foreign correspondent is the real-life starting point for The Correspondent, the feature film based on his memoir The First Casualty. A PerthNow report published on 10 April 2025 said the film was due in Western Australian cinemas from 17 April that year; that historical release date does not establish where the film can be watched now.
What Peter Greste reflected on
The PerthNow report framed Greste’s appearance at the University of Western Australia around the career behind the film: assignments in dangerous and politically volatile places, the importance of war reporting, and challenges terrorism poses for Western media. It was published on 10 April 2025, ahead of the film’s reported Western Australian release. Read the PerthNow report.
Greste is an Australian foreign correspondent. The film’s official account says he was working for Al Jazeera in Nairobi when he was asked to cover for its Egypt correspondent, initially for about two weeks. The assignment became the setting for the events at the centre of The Correspondent. The film’s filmmakers page describes that background and the project’s development after his 2015 release.
What The Correspondent is about
The film follows Greste’s arrest in Cairo, imprisonment in Egypt, trial and eventual release. Its story unfolds amid political upheaval and focuses on a journalist caught in a struggle over reporting and truth. The phrase “a war on truth” is the film’s own framing, not a neutral description of the legal or political dispute. ABC News’ film feature outlines the story, while the official synopsis presents the filmmakers’ perspective.
#1 Best Overall
Kriv Stenders directed the feature, Peter Duncan wrote the screenplay, and Richard Roxburgh plays Greste. The filmmakers say Greste’s accounts of prison informed the film’s setting and emotional perspective. ABC News published an interview with Greste and Roxburgh on 4 April 2025; Greste described watching the film as “a pretty freaky watch” and said, “They nailed it in ways I really didn’t anticipate.” Read the ABC News interview.
The memoir behind the film
The Correspondent is adapted from Greste’s memoir The First Casualty, published in 2017 according to ABC News. The feature film turns the memoir’s account into a focused screen narrative about the Egypt assignment, detention and trial; the book is the longer first-person account. The film’s production account and ABC News identify the memoir as its source.
Rank #2
For readers who want Greste’s own account beyond the film, The First Casualty is the natural next step. The sources establish its connection to the adaptation but do not establish current editions, stock or price.
