That is a secondary estimate, not a verified estate inventory or probate total; the sources cited here do not establish an official figure.
What is Peter Falk’s net worth?
The commonly published figure is $5 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth, whose page was updated April 30, 2026. The estimate refers to Falk’s net worth at his death in 2011. It should not be read as a documented accounting: the available reporting does not provide a primary estate record that confirms the total.
Net worth, the value of an estate, and the value of particular properties are different measures. Assets may be held in trusts or transferred before death, while debts and other liabilities also affect net worth. The reported figure cannot be independently reconciled to an estate accounting from the sources cited here.
What did Peter Falk earn for Columbo?
Historical reports describe Falk’s earnings on Columbo as substantial, but they do not agree on a single per-episode figure. The Los Angeles Times reported in 1995 that Falk received $2 million for four episodes in 1977—equivalent to $500,000 per episode—and described him as television’s highest-paid actor at the time. The Guardian’s 2011 obituary also reported $500,000 per episode during the 1970s. Celebrity Net Worth, updated in 2026, gives a late-1970s peak of $300,000 per episode.

These are published earnings claims, not payroll records. Because the figures conflict, none should be treated as a definitive salary. Nor do episode rates establish lifetime earnings: the sources do not document all of Falk’s contracts, episode counts, residuals, expenses, taxes, or other income.
What is reported about Falk’s estate?
Celebrity Net Worth reports that Falk created trusts, that his second wife, Shera Danese, inherited most of his estate, and that his two adopted daughters received six-figure inheritances. Those reported distributions do not establish the estate’s total value, and they do not independently verify the $5 million net-worth estimate.
The same site reports that Falk bought a Beverly Hills property for $1.25 million in 1979 and that a Malibu home sold for $3.18 million in 2019. A later property value is not a measure of what an individual owned at death, and the 2019 sale took place years after Falk died.
How Columbo fit into Falk’s career
Falk’s work extended beyond the detective role to film, stage, and other television projects. Celebrity Net Worth reports more than 100 acting credits. He also published the memoir Just One More Thing: Stories from My Life in 2006.

Falk understood that Columbo could overshadow other roles. In an archived Fresh Air interview with Terry Gross, he said, “Being known as Columbo, it ain’t cancer,” discussing whether the character’s fame helped or limited his other acting work.
He also explained the detective’s appeal in words quoted by CBS News: “He looks like a flood victim,” Falk said. “You feel sorry for him. He appears to be seeing nothing, but he’s seeing everything. Underneath his dishevelment, a good mind is at work.” CBS News reports that Falk declined an offer to turn Columbo into a weekly series because he thought carrying a weekly detective show would be too great a burden.
