Peter David, the comic-book writer whose defining work included a twelve-year run on The Incredible Hulk, died on May 24, 2025, at age 68. His wife, Kathleen, confirmed his death, which followed a prolonged period of serious illness. The available reporting does not establish a single official cause of death.
Why Peter David mattered to comics
David’s best-known achievement was his twelve-year run on Marvel’s The Incredible Hulk, which began in 1987, according to ICv2. His stories put Bruce Banner’s inner life and the Hulk’s changing identities at the center of the drama, while also broadening the series’ supporting cast. That combination helped make the run a defining period for the character.
His influence extended well beyond one title. David moved among superhero drama, humor, science fiction, creator-owned comics and licensed properties, often bringing a strong character focus to very different worlds.

X-Factor and other Marvel series
At Marvel, David also wrote X-Factor, She-Hulk and Captain Marvel. His work ranged from team dynamics to character-led comedy and drama, making these titles useful next stops after Hulk or Spider-Man 2099.
His DC and other comics work
For DC, David wrote The Atlantis Chronicles, Aquaman, Supergirl and Young Justice. ICv2 credits him with the first 46 issues of the relaunched Aquaman series. He also worked on creator-owned and licensed titles including Fallen Angel, Soulsearchers and Company, Star Trek, Spyboy, Ben 10 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Where should a new reader start?
For the clearest route into the work that defined David’s comics career, start with a collected edition of his Incredible Hulk stories. Spider-Man 2099 and X-Factor offer substantial alternatives. Editions can differ, so check the issues and arcs included, whether the collection is complete for the material you want, its format and current availability before buying; no particular edition’s contents or stock status is established here.
Readers more interested in how comics are written than in a particular superhero series may prefer Writing for Comics with Peter David, his craft book. It is a separate option, not a biography or comprehensive account of his career.
David’s work beyond comics
David also wrote novels, novelizations, television scripts, screenplays and nonfiction. His projects included the Sir Apropos of Nothing novels, the television series Space Cases and Babylon 5, as well as his comics-writing guide. His career therefore reached readers and viewers across several formats.
His honors included the 1992 Eisner Award, the 2011 GLAAD Media Award for X-Factor and the 2016 Inkpot Award. In ICv2’s obituary, CEO Milton Griepp called David’s death “a loss to the art form and humanity.”

A family-site release in 2025
David’s official website reported that a hardcover edition of Completely Howling Mad was released at Comic-Con in 2025. It reprinted the novel Howling Mad and the novelette Moonlight Becomes You; the event edition was described as a numbered hardcover limited to 500 copies, with proceeds from that release going to the David family. That does not establish whether the edition remains available or whether purchases through other sellers benefit the family.
