Takeru Kobayashi announced in a Netflix documentary that he was retiring from competitive eating to focus on his health. But the documentary had been filmed years before it aired, and Kobayashi later said his Japanese words meant he might retire eventually—not that he was stepping away immediately. Netflix announced a September 2024 contest against Joey Chestnut, which took place, so the May 2024 announcement should not be treated as proof of a permanent or current retirement.

What did Kobayashi announce?

On May 21, 2024, news reports said Kobayashi announced his retirement in Netflix’s Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut. He said he wanted to focus on his health after two decades in competitive eating, expressing concern about the consequences and a desire to “repair my brain and gut.” CBS Sports reported the announcement and noted his six Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest wins. Why did he later qualify the announcement?

In a 2024 interview with ESPN, Kobayashi said the documentary had been filmed about three years earlier, during the pandemic. He had not competed for two years at the time and, he said, was not thinking or feeling like an active athlete. He also said the timing of the documentary’s release was not what he intended: the Japanese words he used meant “maybe I will end up retiring eventually,” rather than an immediate, definitive retirement. He recalled, “I did feel that, yeah, maybe I would think about retiring because of the situation that we were all in.” ESPN’s 2024 interview

The original Japanese interview or transcript is not available in the cited reporting, so the precise translation cannot be independently checked here. The careful distinction is between the definitive impression created by the 2024 broadcast and Kobayashi’s later account of what he meant when it was filmed.

What health concerns did he describe?

In a July 2024 interview with The Guardian, Kobayashi described jaw arthritis, lower-back problems and tooth erosion. He also said he no longer felt hunger. He recounted that brain regions associated with nausea and fullness seemed to be constantly firing, even though tests suggested his gut microbiome appeared normal. These are reported details of his own experience, not a diagnosis established by the article or evidence that all competitive eaters develop the same symptoms. The Guardian’s interview

TIME discussed possible health risks of competitive eating and reported that some other competitors said they retained normal appetites. Kobayashi’s account should therefore be understood as personal, not as a population-level finding about the sport. TIME’s 2024 health coverage

Did he compete again after the announcement?

Yes. In June 2024, Netflix announced a live contest between Kobayashi and Joey Chestnut for September 2, 2024, and the contest took place. The Associated Press quoted Kobayashi saying, “Retiring for me will only happen after I take him down one last time.” In The Guardian interview that July, he also said, “I never had a retirement match.” Those statements show that he was still willing to compete after the documentary’s retirement remarks; they do not establish what his plans are now. What is the accurate way to describe his retirement?

Kobayashi’s retirement was reported in May 2024 based on remarks in a documentary filmed years earlier. He later said he had been discussing the possibility of retiring eventually, not announcing an immediate departure, and then participated in the September 2024 Chestnut contest. The available reporting supports that timeline; it does not establish a permanent retirement or his current competition plans in 2026.
