Pete Townshend: Behind Blue Eyes is a 2026 documentary about the Who songwriter’s creative life and the unrealized Lifehouse project. Mill Valley lists a screening on October 4, followed by two Hamptons screenings on October 10 and 11. Here’s what the film covers and what each festival has announced.
What is Pete Townshend: Behind Blue Eyes about?
The documentary focuses on Townshend’s work with The Who and Lifehouse, the ambitious science-fiction rock opera he developed after the success of Tommy. The Hamptons Film Festival synopsis presents the project as emerging during a personal crisis; the Mill Valley Film Festival description traces how Townshend wrote songs, recorded demos, drafted a screenplay and secured financing for a proposed movie before the project fell apart. (Hamptons Film Festival; Mill Valley Film Festival)
The Mill Valley listing says the film combines Townshend’s account with recollections from Roger Daltrey, archival material and new interviews. Townshend’s official site describes the documentary as focused on Lifehouse and The Who’s transitional years after Tommy, in the late 1960s and early 1970s. That site says Townshend sat for a seven-hour interview with writer Cassidy Hartmann; this is the artist site’s account of the interview, not an independently verified production figure. (Pete Townshend’s official site)
Who made the documentary?
Frank Marshall and Nigel Sinclair are identified as co-directors in the festival and production-company listings. The Hamptons guide credits Sinclair, Sam Bridger and Cassidy Hartmann as producers, and Hartmann and Bridger as screenwriters. White Horse Pictures’ page gives the same core director, writer and producer credits. (Hamptons Film Festival; White Horse Pictures)
