Perth-raised actor Melissa George led NBC’s medical drama Heartbeat in 2016, playing Dr. Alex Panttiere, a world-renowned heart-transplant surgeon. The series drew inspiration from real surgeon Kathy Magliato’s life and memoir, but Panttiere is a fictional character rather than a portrayal of Magliato’s biography.
Melissa George’s Perth connection and role
George grew up in Perth’s northern suburbs, according to a PerthNow profile published on April 10, 2016. In Heartbeat, she plays Dr. Alex Panttiere, an outspoken heart-transplant surgeon whose reputation reaches well beyond the hospital where she works. PerthNow’s 2016 profile reported her local background and the role.

What Heartbeat is about
NBC introduced the project on its 2015–16 schedule under the working title Heartbreaker, describing George as its star and Panttiere as an outspoken, world-renowned heart-transplant surgeon. The show was titled Heartbeat by the time it appeared in 2016. The Washington Post’s contemporary television listing and Prime Video’s catalog both identify it as a 2016 series. NBC’s schedule announcement provides the original title and character context; The Washington Post’s March 21, 2016 listing places the series in its launch year.
How the show relates to Kathy Magliato
The drama takes inspiration from real-life heart surgeon Kathy Magliato and her memoir, Heart Matters: A Memoir of a Female Heart Surgeon. That connection is a starting point for the television story, not a claim that the series recounts Magliato’s life episode by episode. Contemporary coverage described the program as fictionalized: Alexandra “Alex” Panttiere is a distinct fictional character, while Magliato is the real surgeon whose career and book informed the premise. Salem News / TV Media’s March 19, 2016 account discusses the memoir connection and the distinction from biography.
#1 Best Overall
- Medical Center - Centro Médico - Vol. 1 (3 DVD)
For viewers interested in the source behind the premise, Magliato’s memoir offers her account of her surgical career; Heartbeat is a dramatized medical series built around Panttiere. Prime Video has a Season 1 catalog listing, but a listing does not guarantee that the series is currently available to stream in every country.
