Perth’s Australia Day Skyworks went ahead on 26 January 2022, with a Swan River air show from 3pm and fireworks scheduled for 8pm. The day also featured free entertainment at Langley Park and the Birak concert at Supreme Court Gardens. This is a retrospective guide: the schedule, viewing locations and COVID rules below applied to the 2022 event, not to current celebrations.
What was on at the 2022 Perth Skyworks?
The advertised program began in the afternoon and built towards fireworks over the Swan River. PerthNow’s event-day guide described fireworks launched from barges. PerthNow’s 2022 event guide listed this schedule:

What COVID rules applied in 2022?
Contemporaneous coverage reported that masks were mandatory at the event. The City encouraged vaccination and physical distancing where possible, and a proposed requirement to show proof of double vaccination had been withdrawn before the event. These are historical details, not current event or public-health advice.
On 26 January 2022, Western Australian Premier Mark McGowan told PerthNow: “We queried (if the Skyworks could go ahead) at length with the Chief Health Officer. He was confident the Skyworks could go ahead today.” He also said: “The advice we had was that we could proceed on the basis that people wore masks and people use common sense.” PerthNow’s event-day report

How many people attended, and what did the event cost?
The City of South Perth’s evaluation gives estimates for the South Perth foreshore and for both sides of the river. It is not an official City of Perth attendance count for every Skyworks activity. City of South Perth’s 2022 event evaluation

The evaluation separately estimates that South Perth’s morning activities drew about 250–300 invited guests or members of the public, while afternoon and early-evening activities attracted an estimated 5,000–10,000 people along the South Perth foreshore. The council raised COVID-19 safety concerns, hot weather, a school and work day on 27 January, and mixed views about Australia Day as possible reasons for lower attendance in 2022; it did not establish these as proven causes.

How did the event change after 2022?
The traditional City of Perth Skyworks did not return in its previous form. In January 2023, ABC reported that the City planned a scaled-down Langley Park event featuring drones and a small fireworks show, with community sentiment and cost cited as reasons for the change.
