Twitter retired the standalone app because usage had declined, support costs were rising, and much of Periscope’s live-video functionality had already been integrated into Twitter. Live broadcasting continued through Twitter’s native tools, but the separate Periscope community and its monetization features ended.
Periscope’s standalone app ended on March 31, 2021
Periscope officially shut down on March 31, 2021, just over six years after its public iOS launch on March 26, 2015. The date matters: some contemporary reports described the service as unavailable on April 1, but Twitter’s help documentation identifies March 31 as the final day.
The shutdown did not mean that Twitter abandoned live video. Instead, Twitter retired a separate app whose technology and audience had increasingly been absorbed into its main platform. Live broadcasting continued through Twitter’s native tools, later known as X Live, while the Periscope app, its separate community, and its monetization features disappeared.
What made Periscope important?
Periscope made a particular version of live video feel simple and social: open a smartphone app, start broadcasting, and let an audience watch and respond immediately. Viewers could comment in real time and send animated hearts to the broadcaster. Streams could also be discovered by other users and replayed after the live broadcast ended.

That combination helped turn mobile livestreaming into a recognizable social-media format. Periscope was not the first livestreaming service. YouTube had offered live-streaming capabilities before its arrival, while Ustream and Livestream were already established. Periscope’s contribution was to make consumer livestreaming unusually visible and easy to use at a moment when smartphones, mobile broadband, and social networks were converging.
Academic research published in 2016 treated Periscope as a prominent example of the technical and quality challenges involved in mobile live streaming. The service had to deliver video quickly over variable mobile connections while supporting a fast-moving layer of comments and reactions. Its success made those challenges visible to a mainstream audience.
From Twitter acquisition to public launch
Kayvon Beykpour and Joe Bernstein created Periscope. Twitter announced that it had acquired the company in March 2015, before the app was publicly released. The acquisition came during an intense period of interest in mobile livestreaming, when Meerkat was attracting attention and social platforms were competing to define the next major form of real-time communication.
Periscope’s public iOS launch followed on March 26, 2015. Twitter released an Android version in May of the same year. Android retained the core broadcast-and-view experience while adding platform-specific features, including notifications and the ability to resume a video after an interruption.

These dates describe two different milestones: Twitter’s acquisition announcement in March 2015 and Periscope’s public launch on March 26. They should not be treated as the same event.
Twitter gradually made a separate Periscope app less necessary
Periscope initially benefited from having its own app, identity, and community. Over time, however, Twitter integrated more of its capabilities into the main Twitter experience. Users could watch Periscope broadcasts directly in Twitter timelines, and Twitter introduced native live broadcasting from its own interface, with the underlying functionality described as powered by Periscope.
This created a familiar platform dilemma. The technology remained useful, but maintaining a separate application and a separate destination for users became harder to justify when the same core activity could happen inside the larger product. Twitter could continue offering live video without continuing to operate Periscope as an independent social network.
Why did Twitter shut down Periscope?
Twitter gave three closely related reasons:
- Usage had declined. The company said fewer people were using the standalone service than in its earlier period.
- Support costs were increasing. Keeping the app and its infrastructure running required ongoing engineering and operational resources.
- The product was in “unsustainable maintenance-mode.” Twitter described Periscope as requiring more support while providing less value as a separate destination, particularly after its major functions had been integrated into Twitter.
Twitter also said it might have made the decision earlier if it had not reprioritized projects during the events of 2020. That is context for the timing, not evidence that the COVID-19 pandemic by itself caused the shutdown.

- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
The most accurate explanation is therefore product consolidation: declining standalone demand, rising maintenance costs, and functional redundancy. Periscope’s closure was not a verdict that live video had stopped mattering. It was a decision to provide live video through a larger platform rather than maintain two overlapping products.
What happened to Periscope broadcasts?
Twitter said that broadcasts shared to Twitter would continue to exist as replays. It also gave broadcasters an opportunity to request or download an archive of their Periscope broadcasts and related data before the app was removed.
That should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every historical broadcast would remain permanently accessible. Twitter’s help information warned that changes to stored broadcasts could result in loss and encouraged users to download material they wanted to preserve. Anyone researching Periscope today should treat surviving recordings as archives, not as a complete or permanently guaranteed public library.
The shutdown also ended Periscope’s separate account and broadcasting functions. Users could no longer create Periscope accounts, broadcast live through the app, or purchase coins there.

What happened to creators, followers, and monetization?
Periscope followers were not automatically transferred to creators’ Twitter accounts. The official FAQ said that followers had to find and manually follow creators on the successor platform. That distinction is important: Twitter preserved some of the functionality, but it did not recreate the standalone Periscope social graph automatically.
The Super Broadcaster program ended with Periscope, as did the ability to purchase coins or send Super Hearts. Twitter’s help documentation states that the monetization program is no longer available.
Creators and publishers could still use Twitter’s live-broadcasting tools. X Live was available through the in-app camera or compose flow, while Media Studio supported live-video workflows for brands, publishers, and creators. Those tools were successors to Periscope’s live-video capabilities, not alternate ways to access the original Periscope app.

Periscope’s historical importance lies in popularization rather than invention. Earlier services had already demonstrated that internet users could broadcast live video. Periscope helped normalize the idea that a person with a phone could create a public, interactive live event and distribute it through an existing social graph.

Its interface also established a memorable vocabulary for mobile livestreaming: the phone camera as a broadcast studio, the live audience as an active participant, and hearts or other reactions as instant feedback. For viewers, a stream was not simply a video to watch. It was an event to enter while it was happening.
The company’s lifecycle illustrates a broader platform strategy. A large service can acquire a specialized product before launch, use its team and technology to accelerate a strategic capability, integrate that capability into the main platform, and eventually retire the standalone brand when maintaining both products no longer makes sense. Periscope’s story is therefore both a chapter in the history of live video and a case study in how platform companies absorb and phase out specialized applications.
Can you still use Periscope?
No. The standalone Periscope iOS and Android apps went offline on March 31, 2021. New accounts, live broadcasting, and in-app coin purchases are no longer available through Periscope.
Readers interested in the app’s history may find a Periscope Beginner’s Guide useful as historical documentation, provided it is available in the relevant market. It should not be treated as instructions for restoring or using the discontinued service. Anyone studying the wider movement may also consult The Live-Streaming Handbook, a broader resource on mobile live-video production and the development of livestreaming beyond Periscope.
