Peggy Lipton died of cancer on May 11, 2019, at age 72. Her daughters, Rashida and Kidada Jones, shared a statement at the time, saying their mother died peacefully with them and her nieces by her side. The available contemporaneous reports document that family tribute, not a later interview or new disclosure.
What Rashida and Kidada Jones said
The Associated Press attributed this statement to Lipton’s daughters: “We are heartbroken that our beloved mother passed away from cancer today. She made her journey peacefully with her daughters and nieces by her side. We feel so lucky for every moment we spent with her. We can’t put all of our feelings into words right now but we will say: Peggy was, and will always be our beacon of light, both in this world and beyond. She will always be a part of us.” The AP report carried by NY1 published the statement on the day of her death.

The statement identifies cancer as the cause of death but does not give a more specific diagnosis. Lipton had previously written about her colon cancer diagnosis and treatment in her 2005 memoir, Breathing Out; that earlier account is separate from the daughters’ statement. The Los Angeles Times obituary discusses the memoir and its subjects.
The roles that defined Lipton’s television career
Lipton was widely known for playing Julie Barnes on The Mod Squad and Norma Jennings on Twin Peaks. She won a Golden Globe for The Mod Squad in 1971, according to the AP’s contemporaneous report.
