Gunn also said the story would play out through “the wider DCU and other stories,” and that Checkmate would carry forward in the DCU. Those comments indicate an intended direction for the wider story, not a Season 3 order, a confirmed Checkmate series, or a confirmed appearance for Peacemaker in a named upcoming project. The reporting does not establish a renewal, production start, or release date.

A wider-universe continuation might eventually answer what happens next, but that is different from giving Peacemaker viewers a sustained resolution within the series they watched. Season 3 could carry the finale’s consequences through a single narrative arc, letting its character conflicts and comedy-drama tone remain central instead of becoming one thread among many.
It could preserve the show’s point of view
Franchise crossovers can make a character matter to a larger story. A season built around that character can do something else: make the larger stakes personal. Keeping the next chapter in Peacemaker would let its particular mix of absurdity, violence, and uneasy intimacy shape the story rather than serving only as a passage to another DCU installment.
