Peacemaker season 2 opens by revising one piece of season 1’s continuity: its recap swaps the Justice League cameo from the original finale for the Justice Gang and other DCU heroes. The original finale remains unchanged, and DC describes season 1’s events as still having happened nearly identically, aside from that cameo and references to other DC heroes.
What the premiere changes
The season 2 premiere, “The Ties That Grind,” begins with a recap framed as “previously in the DCU.” It retells nearly all of season 1, but changes the finale’s brief Justice League appearance. In the recap, the newer DCU’s Justice Gang and associated heroes take that place: coverage identifies Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, Superman and Supergirl.

DC’s official guide describes the season-one events as having occurred “nearly identical to what we saw onscreen.” It names two exceptions: Chris’s references to other DC heroes and the quick Justice League cameo in the finale. The change is therefore a limited continuity retcon, not a declaration that season 1 never happened.
What viewers see in each version
| Version | Heroes in the finale-cameo moment | What it means for season 1 | Was the original footage changed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Season 1 finale as originally released | The Justice League | The original version of the scene remains available in the finale. | No. The finale was not replaced. |
| Season 2 premiere recap | The Justice Gang and associated DCU heroes | The recap reframes the cameo for season 2’s DCU continuity; most season-one events remain. | No. The change is in the recap, not a new cut of the finale. |
Why the old finale was not reshot
In a roundtable interview reported by TechRadar, James Gunn said he wished he could swap the Justice League scene for the updated Justice Gang version, but could not because it was too expensive. He said he would rather spend the money on additional visual-effects shots for Supergirl. Gunn also explained the continuity approach: “We know there are other universes, and this is one where everything is exactly the same as what happened in season one, except for the Justice League’s appearance.” TechRadar’s report attributes those remarks to Gunn, DC Studios co-CEO and Peacemaker creator.

TV Insider separately reported Gunn saying they would not go back and reshoot all of season 1, “at least not at this point.” The practical result is two versions of the cameo moment: the unaltered finale and the recap that presents the continuity version season 2 uses.
How season 1 fits into the DCU
DC’s guide frames season 1 as originally set in the DC Extended Universe and season 2 as set in the newer DC Universe. That shift does not erase the entire first season. The guide’s specific exceptions are the character’s references to other DC heroes and the Justice League cameo; it says the rest of the events remain nearly identical to what appeared onscreen.

Calling this a “Zack Snyder retcon” is shorthand for the older Justice League cameo’s association with the Snyder-era DC continuity. It should not be read as evidence that Snyder personally made, approved or publicly addressed this particular change. The reported explanation for the choice came from Gunn.
