Glaser said the loss was difficult to comprehend, recalling that they had recently been trading “loving insults” by phone.
What Paul Michael Glaser said about David Soul
In an interview with People, syndicated by Yahoo on January 6, 2024, Glaser mourned Soul in words that reflected both affection and disbelief: “David was a brother, a friend, a caring man,” he said. “We shall never see his like again.”
Glaser also recalled their ongoing phone banter: “I find it difficult to comprehend David’s passing. Seems only yesterday that we were sharing loving insults on the phone.” He described the grief as something he expected to face gradually: “It just takes time, I tell myself; saying goodbye to such a dear friend and important part of my life I suspect that I will let myself feel his loss, our loss, only gradually.”
Were Starsky and Hutch friends in real life?
Glaser’s recollections establish warmth and continued contact between the actors, including their teasing conversations by phone. He described Soul as a brother and dear friend; the comments offer a personal glimpse of their bond without claiming to tell every detail of their private friendship.

How their partnership began on screen
In the ABC crime series Starsky & Hutch, Glaser played Detective David “Starsky” and Soul played Detective Ken “Hutch” Hutchinson. The Associated Press dates the series to 1975–1979, while Soul’s official biography gives a 1974–1979 run. Its popularity extended beyond television, inspiring children’s toys.
The original stars later appeared together in cameos in the 2004 film remake, led by Ben Stiller as Starsky and Owen Wilson as Hutch. That reunion was distinct from the original series: Glaser and Soul returned briefly, while the younger actors led the film.
