Entertainment Weekly’s October 22, 2024 cover story follows Paul Mescal and Pedro Pascal into the world of Gladiator II, a sequel built around Lucius’s return to Rome, his pursuit of revenge, and a fight over who will rule the empire. The interviews with the cast and director Ridley Scott also describe the actors’ physical preparation and the production’s ambition.

Lucius returns to Rome as a captive and a gladiator

Paul Mescal plays Lucius, the sequel’s central character and the son of Lucilla, played by Connie Nielsen. After the events of the 2000 film, Lucilla sent Lucius to Numidia under a new identity to keep him safe from those who might see him as a possible heir. When Roman forces led by General Marcus Acacius, played by Pedro Pascal, conquer Numidia, Lucius is taken captive.

Denzel Washington plays Macrinus, a gladiator trader who offers Lucius a route to revenge: fight for him in exchange for Acacius’s head. That bargain propels the story, but Lucius’s return also forces him to confront his family history and his place in Rome.

Revenge is only one part of the political conflict

The film places Lucius’s personal search for identity inside a struggle over Rome’s leadership and future. The ruling twins, Geta (Joseph Quinn) and Caracalla (Fred Hechinger), represent the emperors at the center of that contest. Nielsen described Lucilla as caught between the political use others make of her and her own hopes for Rome. She framed the broader tension as a choice between governing and controlling, saying: “I think people around the world are reacting to a return of illegitimate power in many places and a turn towards power that wants to control rather than govern,”

Pascal characterized Acacius as a soldier more concerned with leadership than power. “He’s a soldier through and through,” he said. That is Pascal’s reading of the character, not a neutral account of Acacius’s motives; the film’s conflict turns in part on how Lucius and others understand the general.

How the sequel relates to the original

Gladiator II shifts the point of view from Maximus, played by Russell Crowe in the 2000 original, to Lucius. EW reports that the sequel reveals Maximus as Lucius’s biological father. Mescal said he approached the role by looking for the differences between Lucius and Maximus rather than trying to reproduce Crowe’s performance.

Gladiator II (2024) [Blu-ray]
  • From legendary director Ridley Scott, Gladiator II continues the epic saga of power, intrigue, and vengeance set in Ancient Rome.

The original Gladiator earned more than $465 million worldwide and won five Oscars, according to EW. Its legacy is part of the sequel’s context, but the new story follows a different protagonist and gives Lucius’s family ties and political choices their own weight.

Mescal and Pascal describe demanding physical work

Mescal’s preparation for Lucius

Mescal told EW he spent the better part of six months on strength training, fight choreography, horse training, and sword fighting. He also recalled shooting in a particularly hot arena and using ice between takes. Those details are the actor’s account of his preparation and working conditions.

Pascal’s work as Acacius

Pascal described gladiator training and stunt-heavy work, calling Gladiator II the most physical project of his career to that point. Mescal, meanwhile, said of taking on the film: “When it came my way, I felt like I was right for it, and as ready as you could be for doing something on a bigger scale,”

Scale on set: a built Colosseum and a remote-controlled rhino

Scott told The Associated Press that the production built a Colosseum set at 40 percent of full scale, which he considered less expensive than using blue screen for the relevant shots. He also compared staffing levels, saying Gladiator II used 1,200 personnel, against 900 for Napoleon. These are Scott’s figures as reported by the AP in an article published September 4, 2024 and updated ahead of the film’s release. Scott summed up the set with: “We built Rome,”

EW reports that the film’s rhino was made with a 3-D printer and controlled remotely; it was not a real animal on set.
