PerthNow reported on 10 November 2022 that Paul Hogan had been photographed smoking a cigarette while walking in Venice Beach, California. The report placed the sighting shortly after Hogan discussed health problems in a televised interview, but it does not state the photograph’s exact date. The images were credited to Backgrid/Supplied.
What PerthNow reported
PerthNow’s 10 November 2022 report described Hogan walking in Venice Beach, California, while smoking a cigarette. The images were credited “Backgrid/Supplied.” The article’s phrase “just days” connects the sighting to Hogan’s recent interview, but the accessible report does not give a date for the photographs. Its publication date should not be treated as the date they were taken.

What Hogan said about his health
In an interview with Tracy Grimshaw for A Current Affair, Hogan described a problem involving the aorta near his kidney and the physical effects he associated with treatment. PerthNow quoted him as saying: “I’ve been better. I had a problem on the aorta in the kidney and the treatment fixed it but it shrunk me.” He also said: “I’ve lost all my body fat and the muscles all shrank and the strength has come back because it left me feeble.”
PerthNow identified the condition as retroperitoneal fibrosis and reported that Hogan had a pacemaker fitted. Nine’s A Current Affair coverage also named retroperitoneal fibrosis, describing a growth that pressed on his kidney, and said doctors prescribed corticosteroids. These details come from media accounts of Hogan’s disclosed health history, not from clinical records.

What the 2022 account does—and does not—establish
PerthNow said Hogan wanted to return to Australia but that frailty and his son kept him in the United States at the time. That is an account of his circumstances in 2022, not an update on where he lives or how he is doing now.
- The report documents a smoking sighting as described by PerthNow and credited to Backgrid/Supplied; it does not establish Hogan’s current smoking status.
- The interview records what Hogan said about his health and treatment; it is not an independent medical assessment.
- Neither the report nor the interview establishes Hogan’s current health.
Hogan’s earlier comments on cigarette advertising
Smoking had also been part of Hogan’s public history through his cigarette advertising work. In a 2019 ABC retrospective, he reflected on the advertising and said: “I regret the cigarette one but I did smoke them and, you know, I was just … and in those days, ‘Doctors recommend Chesterfield’ – cigarettes were good for us, you know, so far as we knew.” This was a retrospective comment, not a statement about the Venice Beach sighting.

PerthNow also recounted remarks Hogan made to the Sunday Herald Sun in 2013, including that “we were encouraging people to smoke” and “It was a staggering success but I was a drug dealer.” Those quotations are attributed here to PerthNow’s account of that interview.
