Professional boxer Paul Bamba was reported dead at 35 in a joint announcement by his family and manager, Ne-Yo. The tribute remembered Bamba for his “exceptional drive and determination.” It did not disclose how or when he died. Bamba had won the WBA Gold Cruiserweight title six days earlier, stopping Rogelio Medina by technical knockout.
What was announced about Paul Bamba’s death?
BBC Sport reported on December 28, 2024, that Bamba’s family and Ne-Yo jointly announced his death. Their statement began: “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of beloved son, brother, friend and boxing champion Paul Bamba, whose light and love touched countless lives.” BBC Sport reported the announcement and tribute.
The statement described Bamba as “a tremendous individual that inspired many with his exceptional drive and determination.” It was a tribute, not an explanation of his death. The announcement coverage did not establish a precise date or cause; December 27 was when the announcement was reported, not a confirmed date of death. Field Level Media’s report noted that no cause or precise date was disclosed.
What championship did Bamba win shortly before his death?
On December 21, 2024, Bamba defeated Rogelio Medina by sixth-round technical knockout in New Jersey to win the WBA Gold Cruiserweight title. The World Boxing Association confirmed the result in its report on Bamba. “Gold” matters: this was the WBA Gold title, not an established claim that Bamba had become an undisputed champion or won the division’s primary world championship. The WBA listed Bamba’s professional record as 19 wins, three losses and 18 knockouts. ESPN separately reported that he won all 14 of his bouts in 2024 by knockout.
