Patti Scialfa disclosed that she was diagnosed with early-stage multiple myeloma in 2018. She shared the diagnosis in Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, explaining that the illness affects her immune system and makes touring challenging. The remarks do not establish her current treatment or health status.

What cancer does Patti Scialfa have?

Scialfa said in the documentary that she had been diagnosed with “early stage multiple myeloma” in 2018, while she and Bruce Springsteen were doing Springsteen on Broadway. The Los Angeles Times reported her diagnosis and wording.

Multiple myeloma is the specific diagnosis she disclosed; describing it only as cancer leaves out the information she made public. A U.S. population estimate offers context, not information about Scialfa’s individual case: ABC News reported the National Cancer Institute’s estimate of 35,000 multiple myeloma diagnoses in the United States in 2024. What did Scialfa say about touring and performing?

In the film, Scialfa said, “Touring has become a challenge for me,” and explained that the disease affects her immune system. She also said, “I have to be careful what I choose to do and where I choose to go.” The Associated Press reported that she described occasionally coming to a show and singing a few songs on stage as her “new normal” at the time of filming, adding that she was “OK with that.”

What is known about her treatment or current health?

The public remarks reported with the documentary do not say whether Scialfa is currently receiving treatment or describe her present-day condition or prognosis. The Associated Press said her spokesperson would provide no further information at the time, including about current treatment. Those limits mean the 2018 diagnosis and documentary comments should not be treated as an update on her health today.
