She disclosed the diagnosis in the 2024 documentary Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. In August 2026, the Los Angeles Times reported that Springsteen said Scialfa was in remission; that is a report of his statement, not an independently verified clinical update.
What Patti Scialfa disclosed about her diagnosis
Scialfa revealed the diagnosis in Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, a documentary about Springsteen and the E Street Band. ABC News reported that the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2024.

As quoted by the Los Angeles Times, Scialfa said: “In 2018, while Bruce and I were doing the play on Broadway [‘Springsteen on Broadway’], I was diagnosed with early stage multiple myeloma. And this affects my immune system.”
Her account places the diagnosis in 2018. The public disclosure came six years later, in the documentary released in 2024.

Why the illness made touring difficult
Scialfa said the disease affects her immune system and described the care she takes in choosing activities and places to go. In the documentary, she said, “Touring has become a challenge for me,” and, “I just have to be careful what I choose to do and where I choose to go.”
She also described sometimes attending a show and singing a few songs onstage: “Every once in a while I come to a show or two and I can sing a few songs onstage. And that’s been a treat. That’s the normal for me right now. And I’m OK with that.” Those remarks describe her circumstances as presented in the 2024 film; they should not be read as an update to her current touring schedule.

What Bruce Springsteen later said about remission
On August 4, 2026, the Los Angeles Times reported that Springsteen said Scialfa was in remission after living with multiple myeloma for more than eight years. The newspaper attributed the comment to a video message at the Pan-Mass Challenge. The report is the basis for the public remission update; it is not a medical record or a detailed account of her care.
What multiple myeloma is
Multiple myeloma is a cancer of plasma cells, a type of white blood cell found in bone marrow. Plasma cells normally make antibodies that help fight infection. In multiple myeloma, abnormal plasma cells multiply and can crowd out healthy cells. This is general medical context, not a description of Scialfa’s individual disease course.

In 2024, a spokesman for Scialfa declined to release further details, including whether she was receiving treatment at that time, according to an Associated Press report reproduced by Stars and Stripes. That was the spokesman’s position then; it does not establish her current care.

The documentary was reported at the time to be scheduled for streaming on Hulu and Disney+ beginning October 25, 2024. That was a historical release plan, not confirmation of present availability, which can vary by territory and change over time.
