Patrick Mahomes appeared teary-eyed after the Kansas City Chiefs lost 40–22 to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX. The emotional images were real, but the strongest evidence supports “visibly emotional” or “teary-eyed,” not an unqualified claim that he was sobbing or that a particular private moment caused his reaction.
Patrick Mahomes appeared teary-eyed on the Kansas City Chiefs’ sideline after Philadelphia defeated Kansas City 40–22 in Super Bowl LIX on February 9, 2025. The images support describing Mahomes as visibly emotional, but the available reporting does not establish that he was sobbing or explain precisely what caused the reaction.
Why Mahomes became emotional
The defeat ended Kansas City’s attempt to become the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls. The Chiefs had won Super Bowl LVII and Super Bowl LVIII, then reached the championship game again after beating Buffalo 32–29 in the AFC Championship Game on January 26, 2025. Philadelphia stopped that historic run decisively at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.
During the final moments and immediate aftermath, Mahomes was shown looking teary-eyed on the sideline. Sky Sports described him as “teary-eyed” and credited the image to Associated Press photographer Abbie Parr. That is strong evidence that Mahomes looked visibly upset, but it is more precise than stating without qualification that he “cried.”

An official NFL postgame video shows Mahomes saying the loss would motivate him to improve.
How the Eagles beat the Chiefs
Philadelphia’s defense made the game one of the most difficult nights of Mahomes’ career. The Eagles built a 24–0 halftime lead, with two second-quarter interceptions of Mahomes turning directly into Philadelphia touchdowns. Kansas City’s official account identifies those turnovers as pivotal momentum swings.
Philadelphia eventually led 34–0 before the Chiefs began to produce points. Mahomes finished 21 of 32 passing for 257 yards and three touchdowns, but those numbers came after the deficit had become enormous. The Eagles controlled the game with pressure, takeaways and a defense that repeatedly disrupted Kansas City’s offense. The NFL’s game analysis also identified Philadelphia’s defensive performance as central to the 40–22 victory.

What Mahomes said after the loss
Mahomes’ postgame comments were self-critical rather than an attempt to shift blame. He said he needed to improve and accepted that his two interceptions had hurt the team. In the NFL’s postgame video, he framed the defeat as something that would push him to become better.

As the NFL reported, he wrote that he had let Chiefs fans down, said he would continue working and expressed confidence that the team would return. That response provides direct evidence of his mindset after the game; it does not, however, prove what specific thought or conversation prompted the sideline images.
Additional postgame coverage described Mahomes embracing Tammy Reid, the wife of Chiefs head coach Andy Reid. That moment adds context to the emotional aftermath, although it should not be treated as independent proof that tears were visible. Sports Illustrated reported on the embrace.

Did Patrick Mahomes actually cry?
The most responsible answer is that Mahomes appeared teary-eyed and visibly emotional. A still image and postgame coverage support that description. They do not, by themselves, establish that he was continuously crying, sobbing or reacting to one particular private event.
That distinction matters because “cries” can imply a level of certainty that the available evidence does not support. The verified sequence is straightforward:
