Patrick Dempsey’s defining role is Dr. Derek Shepherd on Grey’s Anatomy, but his best-known work also traces a career that moved from teen comedy to romantic fantasy and, later, a racing biopic. This is an editorial shortlist, not an objective ranking: it weighs cultural recognition, career significance, genre, and how each part compares with Dempsey’s familiar romantic-lead image.
Derek Shepherd in Grey’s Anatomy (2005 onward)
For most viewers, Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd is the first role to name. D23 describes Dempsey’s run as 11 seasons and notes his Golden Globe nomination for the performance; the Dempsey Center also identifies Shepherd as his best-known role. The length of the run and the character’s recognition make this the natural lead choice in a list of Dempsey’s screen roles, whether “best” means most culturally prominent or simply the role a viewer likes most. D23’s Disney Legends biography documents the tenure and nomination.
Ronald Miller in Can’t Buy Me Love (1987)
Dempsey’s early film breakthrough came as Ronald Miller, a high-school student who pays a popular classmate to pretend to date him. D23 describes the film as one of his first major movie roles and says it brought him teen-pop-culture attention. That makes it a key career milestone, though early prominence is not the same thing as an objective verdict on which performance is best. The Dempsey Center’s biography also lists the film among his credits.
Robert Philip in Enchanted (2007)
In this romantic fantasy, Dempsey plays Robert Philip, a New Yorker whose ordinary life is interrupted when a fairy-tale heroine arrives in the real world. Opposite Amy Adams, he brings his romantic-lead persona into a family comedy shaped by fairy-tale conventions and musical-comedy elements. D23 outlines Robert’s role in the story, while an ABC News profile from 2008 discusses Dempsey’s part in the film. D23’s biography and ABC News’ 2008 profile provide context.

Andrew Hennings in Sweet Home Alabama (2002)
Before Grey’s Anatomy, Dempsey played Andrew Hennings opposite Reese Witherspoon in this romantic comedy. The role belongs on a career-focused shortlist because it shows him working within the romantic-comedy mode that would become closely associated with his screen image. D23’s biography records the film and his co-starring role.
Jack Qwant in Bridget Jones’s Baby (2016)
Dempsey’s role as Jack Qwant marks a later film chapter after his long television run. In a 2016 ABC News interview, he discussed leaving Grey’s Anatomy and the release of Bridget Jones’s Baby. Asked about departing the series, he said, “I think it was just time,” adding that “sometimes creatively you need to move on and emotionally you need to move on, and that’s what happened.” The film is one of his notable later credits, rather than an extension of his original television role. Piero Taruffi in Ferrari (2023)
As Italian racing driver Piero Taruffi, Dempsey takes on a part that contrasts with the romantic leads for which audiences often know him. FOXFLASH identifies him as Taruffi in the film. The contrast is especially useful when looking at the range of his roles, without assuming that a change of type by itself proves anything about the film’s reception or the quality of the performance. FOXFLASH’s Ferrari biography identifies the character.

Dempsey described the recurring pattern himself in a 2016 ABC News interview with Peter Travers: “My career’s been based on a specific archetype, which is usually the prince base or the romantic lead,” he said. He added, “But there’s a lot more for me to explore.” Taken together, these credits show both the durability of that romantic-lead image and a useful range around it: teen comedy in Can’t Buy Me Love, fairy-tale romance in Enchanted, ensemble comedy in Bridget Jones’s Baby, and a racing-driver role in Ferrari. The full ABC News interview includes his comments on the archetype and his next career phase.
