In his first televised interview after a jury deadlocked in Lindsay Clancy’s murder trial, Patrick Clancy rejected headlines calling his former wife a “monster,” said he had forgiven her, and said he believed mental illness caused her actions. Those are Patrick’s views—not a court’s finding about her mental state or criminal responsibility. The interview aired on CBS’s 60 Minutes after the trial ended in a mistrial.
What Patrick Clancy said in the interview
Patrick said headlines calling Lindsay a “Killer Mom,” “Baby Murderer” and “Monster” were inaccurate. As CBS quoted him on 60 Minutes: “I saw headlines that said, you know, ‘Killer Mom,’ and ‘Baby Murderer,’ ‘Monster.’ And none of them were accurate.”
He said he believed Lindsay’s mental illness caused her actions. “I think if people said, ‘She did a horrible thing,’ I think everyone could agree with that. …But I believe that it was her mental illness that caused that,” he said. This was his explanation, not a legal determination.
Patrick also said he had forgiven Lindsay, although she had not asked him for forgiveness. He described feeling that he had done the best he could with the information and resources he had at the time: “I think I did the best I could with what I had at the time. And I live with the outcome. I live with it every day.”

His account of the family’s experience
In the interview, Patrick described Lindsay’s mental health worsening in the months after the birth of their youngest child, Callan. He spoke of sleeplessness, depression and intrusive thoughts as he understood them, and said he struggled to navigate medical care and did not know how to manage a postpartum illness. CBS reported that his account included emergency-room visits and a psychiatric hospitalization before the deaths. These are interview statements and reported chronology; they do not independently establish a diagnosis or determine criminal responsibility.
Patrick said that after returning from an errand, he found Lindsay injured outside their home and then found the children in the basement. He said Cora, 5, and Dawson, 3, were dead, while Callan, 8 months old, was taken to hospital. Patrick said Callan lived for four days and died in his arms. These details are from his account in the interview.

Why Patrick objected to online speculation
Patrick said online theories about him were painful and distracted from the issue he believed deserved attention: perinatal mental health. ABC quoted him saying, “It’s deeply harmful to the legacy of my children. It is a huge distraction from what really matters here, which is perinatal mental health. And it’s done real harm to real people, myself included but also others.” CBS and ABC also reported his concern about public scrutiny and speculation. Unsupported online allegations about him should not be treated as established facts.
What happened in Lindsay Clancy’s trial
The first trial ended on September 4, 2026, when jurors could not reach a verdict. The result was a mistrial, not an acquittal or a conviction. The prosecution and defense presented different positions on Lindsay’s mental state and criminal responsibility; the jury did not resolve that dispute.

In an October 2026 update, the Associated Press reported that a judge denied the defense’s motion seeking a not-guilty finding for insufficient evidence. That ruling did not decide guilt. AP reported that the judge left the credibility of expert testimony and the ultimate decision to a jury.
In that AP report, prosecutors had not announced whether they would retry Lindsay, pursue lesser charges or drop the case. No later decision is established here, so the case’s status may have changed.

Patrick’s “monster” remark was not new
Patrick’s rejection of the “monster” label also echoes a statement he had made earlier. Boston.com reported after the mistrial that he had told The New Yorker: “I wasn’t married to a monster — I was married to someone who got sick.” That wording predates the 60 Minutes interview; it was not a new quote from that segment.
