For a meaningful introduction to BR Ambedkar, choose a book that matches the question you want to explore: his life, his ideas, the Ambedkar–Gandhi debate, or the wider Dalit movement. Scroll.in’s April 14, 2024, anniversary list recommends 14 books across biography, intellectual history, memoir and graphic storytelling. It is a set of different entry points, not a ranking or a guide to current editions.

Ambedkar was born on April 14, 1891, in Mhow, in what is now Madhya Pradesh. The Dr. Ambedkar Foundation’s Government of India biography describes caste as a major barrier in his life and his return to India as part of a struggle against untouchability. The books below approach that struggle from distinct angles.

Fourteen books about Ambedkar and the struggle for dignity

The descriptions below reflect how Scroll.in presented the books; they are not independent reviews. Use them to identify a starting point, then check the edition and language that suit you.

Biographies and accounts of a life

  1. Ambedkar: A Life — Shashi Tharoor. A biography spanning Ambedkar’s life, the social humiliations and barriers he faced, political disputes, legal work and constitutional vision.
  2. Becoming Babasaheb: The Life and Times of Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, Birth to Mahad (1891–1929) — Aakash Singh Rathore. Follows Ambedkar from birth through the Mahad Satyagraha. Scroll’s description says Rathore drew on original archival research to address inaccurate accounts of this period.
  3. A Part Apart: The Life and Thought of BR Ambedkar — Ashok Gopal. A broad intellectual biography exploring how Ambedkar’s education, reading, political relationships, religious thought and public work shaped his ideas and legacy.
  4. Ambedkar: Towards an Enlightened India — Gail Omvedt. A concise biography emphasizing Ambedkar’s education, experience of untouchability and public career, as well as his argument that India’s freedom depends on the liberation of oppressed groups.
  5. Ambedkar: The Attendant Details — Salim Yusufji. Collects details and recollections about Ambedkar beyond public history, including accounts from attendants, admirers and companions.

Ideas, politics and intellectual history

  1. Dr Ambedkar and Untouchability: Analysing and Fighting Caste — Christophe Jaffrelot. Considers Ambedkar as a social theorist, statesman and politician, and as an opponent of caste Hinduism who advocated Buddhism as a way out of social oppression.
  2. Ambedkar and Other Immortals — Soumyabrata Choudhury. A philosophical interpretation that approaches Ambedkar through the idea of equality and a framework associated with philosopher Alain Badiou.
  3. The Evolution of Pragmatism in India: An Intellectual Biography of BR Ambedkar — Scott R. Stroud. Examines pragmatism’s influence on Ambedkar’s thought and political persuasion, including where his approach differed from John Dewey’s framework.
  4. The Radical in Ambedkar: Critical Reflections — edited by Anand Teltumbde and Suraj Yengde. Essays consider Ambedkar’s ideas in relation to minority rights, Buddhism, caste oppression, racism, Marxism and feminism.

Debate, memoir and movement

  1. The Doctor and the Saint: The Ambedkar-Gandhi Debate — Arundhati Roy. Places Ambedkar’s arguments in the context of his extended political debate with Gandhi and the history behind their disagreement.
  2. Babasaheb: My Life With Dr Ambedkar — Savita Ambedkar, translated from Marathi by Nadeem Khan. A memoir by Ambedkar’s second wife about their life together, his work and his legacy, told from her perspective.
  3. Ambedkar’s World: The Making of Babasaheb and the Dalit Movement — Eleanor Zelliot. Follows social and political forces around Ambedkar and the Dalit movement, from early Mahar organizing through the mass conversion to Buddhism in 1956.

Graphic storytelling and books for younger readers

  1. Bhimayana: Experiences of Untouchability — Durgabai Vyam, Subhash Vyam, Srividya Natarajan and S. Anand. A graphic work interweaving Ambedkar’s life with contemporary experiences of untouchability. Scroll highlights the Gond artists’ visual storytelling and describes the book as suitable for young readers.
  2. BR Ambedkar: Saviour of the Masses — Payal Kapadia. A narrative for young readers about Ambedkar’s public life and movements for Dalit social and political betterment.

Where to read Ambedkar’s own writings and speeches

Biographies and interpretations are only one way into Ambedkar’s work. The Ministry of External Affairs lists volumes of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar: Writings and Speeches at mea.gov.in/ambedkar.htm. The Dr. Ambedkar Foundation describes its collected-works scheme as involving translation, publication and distribution, including Hindi and regional languages; its portal also lists English and several Indian languages: ambedkarfoundation.nic.in.

The Foundation’s Government of India biography says: “He laid special emphasis on dignity, unity, freedom and rights for all citizens as enshrined in the Constitution.” Reading Ambedkar’s speeches and writings alongside a biography can help you encounter his arguments directly rather than only through later interpretations.
