Panda TV: The Defunct Chinese Twitch Rival Behind the 2015 “Amazon” Headline

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Panda TV was a real Chinese game-livestreaming platform—not merely a proposed Twitch competitor—but it no longer operates. Announced in September 2015 by Wang Sicong, the service entered China’s already crowded esports-streaming market, became a significant platform by 2018, and shut down its content services on March 8, 2019, amid a cash crisis and reported debt problems.

The original headline, “Watch Out, Amazon: China Is Launching a Twitch Rival Called Panda TV,” described an announcement-stage startup. The “Amazon” reference was comparative: Amazon had acquired Twitch in 2014. Amazon did not own, fund, or operate Panda TV.

What Panda TV was—and what happened to it

Panda TV was a Chinese live-streaming service focused on video games and esports. It was associated with Shanghai Panda Entertainment Culture Co., which Chinese reporting placed as having been established in July 2015. Wang Sicong was identified as the company’s chief executive and a principal investor or executive figure.

At launch, the platform’s proposition was straightforward: attract prominent Chinese and international esports players, teams, and streamers, then build an audience around live games and competitions. The strategy drew on Wang’s celebrity, capital connections, and existing position in esports. He was already associated with Invictus Gaming, a Chinese esports organization.

Contemporary reporting presented Panda TV as a Chinese answer to Twitch, but that shorthand can be misleading in retrospect. Panda TV’s most immediate rivals were domestic services such as Douyu, Huya, Zhanqi, and Longzhu. The company was competing for Chinese viewers, streamers, advertising, sponsorships, and game-related rights inside China’s own livestreaming ecosystem.

The 2015 announcement was not the same as a full launch

The September 2015 reporting came at the announcement stage. GamesBeat reported that Panda TV had been announced through a Weibo post as an upcoming Twitch competitor and described its intended focus on live game and esports video. GamesBeat’s contemporary report also supplied the connection to Amazon: Twitch had become an Amazon property after its acquisition in September 2014.

The South China Morning Post reported that Wang Sicong would serve as CEO and that Panda TV intended to broadcast live esports events. It also described plans to recruit core members of Chinese and overseas professional esports teams as anchors or hosts.

Chinese secondary reports said the service planned an invitation-based internal or limited test on September 21, 2015, using invitation or activation codes. That should be treated as a reported testing timetable—not proof that Panda TV had completed a broad public launch on that date. The original “is launching” wording therefore reflected the uncertainty of a new service preparing to go live, not an established platform already operating at scale.

July 2015 Chinese reporting placed the establishment of Shanghai Panda Entertainment Culture Co. around this period.
September 5–8, 2015 Wang Sicong publicly announced Panda TV and was identified in contemporary coverage as its CEO. International reports framed it as a Twitch rival. SCMP coverage
September 21, 2015 Secondary Chinese reports said Panda TV planned an invitation-based test or limited launch. Gamersky report
December 2018 TechNode, citing Jiguang data, reported that Panda TV ranked third among Chinese game-livestreaming platforms by daily active users, behind Huya and Douyu.
March 8, 2019 Caixin reported that Panda TV shut down its content services. SCMP also reported the end of service amid a cash crisis.
March 18, 2019 TechNode reported that the servers were expected to shut down around this date and that possible acquisition discussions had not materialized.

From high-profile launch to a notable platform

Panda TV did not disappear immediately after its announcement. By the end of 2018, it had become one of China’s recognizable game-livestreaming services. TechNode reported, citing Jiguang data, that Panda TV ranked third in daily active users among Chinese game-livestreaming platforms in December 2018, behind Huya and Douyu.

That ranking is important, but it should not be mistaken for a current market position. Panda TV is defunct, and the figure was a contemporary measurement from a named data source. It shows that the company achieved meaningful scale before its collapse; it does not show that it was ever the dominant Chinese streaming service or that it defeated Twitch in a global contest.

The platform’s appeal was partly built around talent. Recruiting known esports players and professional team members could give a new service instant credibility and help it attract fans. In livestreaming, however, recognizable talent is expensive to retain. A platform must convert attention into sustainable revenue while paying for infrastructure, moderation, rights, marketing, and sometimes large streamer contracts.

Why Panda TV failed

No single public explanation accounts for the shutdown. The strongest retrospective reading of the available reporting is that Panda TV was caught in a difficult combination of financial, managerial, competitive, and rights-related pressures.

1. An unstable business model

Caixin’s analysis identified an unstable business model and weak internal management among the sector’s problems. A livestreaming platform can accumulate users quickly while still losing money: it has to fund technology and operations, compete for streamers, and develop advertising, virtual-gifting, sponsorship, or other revenue streams at sufficient scale.

The headline growth story could therefore conceal a serious cash-flow problem. A high user ranking was not equivalent to financial health.

2. Fierce domestic competition

Panda TV entered a market that already included several established Chinese platforms. Huya and Douyu were major competitors, while Zhanqi and Longzhu were also part of the contemporary competitive field described in launch coverage. Each platform competed for viewers and for the streamers capable of bringing those viewers with them.

That made the business more expensive than the “Chinese Twitch” label suggests. Panda TV was not simply importing a proven model into an empty market. It was attempting to win share against services that already had audiences, relationships, and operating experience.

  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

3. Rights and platform power

Game livestreaming depends on more than the ability to transmit video. The platform needs access to games, competitions, teams, leagues, and other content that viewers want to watch. Caixin described copyright and content-rights pressure as a major industry issue and emphasized Tencent’s ownership of important game and platform rights.

This created an asymmetry. A service might have money and popular hosts but still face limits on which games or tournaments it could legally and commercially show. Rights ownership could also strengthen a large incumbent across multiple parts of the ecosystem.

4. A weakening market environment

Caixin reported that China’s livestreaming-user numbers had declined year over year by the end of 2018. Even if the overall audience remained large, slower or negative user growth would make it harder for loss-making services to justify continued spending.

When investors become less willing to fund user acquisition and streamer contracts, a platform’s dependence on fresh capital becomes a critical vulnerability. That appears to have been especially important in Panda TV’s final months.

5. Funding problems and reported liabilities

Caixin reported that Panda TV shut down after failing to secure new funding and said the collapse affected a workforce of about 500 people. TechNode reported that acquisition discussions involving Huya, Douyu, and NetEase had not materialized, and cited media reports that debt exceeded RMB 700 million.

The RMB 700 million figure should be understood as a reported figure during the collapse, not as an independently audited liability total established here. Likewise, descriptions of bankruptcy proceedings and ownership should be treated cautiously unless supported by Chinese corporate or court records. The defensible conclusion is that Panda TV ran out of viable financial options and could not continue operating its content service.

Why “Panda TV lost to Twitch” is the wrong conclusion

The original comparison with Twitch made sense as a headline. Twitch was the best-known Western game-livestreaming reference point, and Amazon’s ownership made the story commercially interesting. But Panda TV did not primarily fail because it lost a direct international contest against Twitch.

Twitch and Panda TV operated in different regulatory, language, rights, and market environments. Panda TV’s practical rivals were Chinese platforms, and its problems were tied to the economics of China’s livestreaming industry: streamer competition, domestic rights, management, funding, and consolidation around powerful game and platform owners.

In other words, the relevant question is not “Why couldn’t Panda TV beat Amazon?” It is “Why could a well-funded, high-profile Chinese platform with substantial audience traction still fail to build a durable business?” The contemporary reporting points to an answer involving high operating costs, an unstable model, crowded competition, rights pressure, and an inability to secure further financing.

How game livestreaming worked behind the headline

What happened to the people and company?

Caixin reported that Panda TV’s content services ended on March 8, 2019, while SCMP reported that the shutdown followed a failure to obtain new funding and affected roughly 500 employees. TechNode separately described expected server shutdowns and unsuccessful acquisition discussions.

Those reports describe the operational collapse, but they do not by themselves establish every detail of the company’s later bankruptcy process, creditor claims, ownership structure, or the fate of individual streamers. It is safer to say that Panda TV’s platform shut down and that its business entered a reported financial and bankruptcy crisis than to present unverified procedural details as settled fact.

How to read the 2015 headline today

The headline is best understood as a snapshot of startup ambition in China’s rapidly expanding game-streaming market:

  • “Watch out, Amazon” referred to Twitch’s ownership by Amazon, not to Amazon’s involvement with Panda TV.
  • “China is launching” described an announced service preparing for testing, not a mature platform.
  • “Twitch rival” was a useful commercial comparison, but Panda TV’s real competitive arena was primarily domestic.
  • “Panda TV” should not be confused with unrelated public-access television stations, later apps, streamers, or other organizations using similar names.
  • The later outcome was a genuine platform that reached notable scale and then shut down in March 2019.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Panda TV still operating?

No. Caixin reported that Panda TV shut down its content services on March 8, 2019. The platform should not be described as a current Twitch alternative.

Was Panda TV owned by Amazon?

No. The Amazon connection was a comparison with Twitch, which Amazon had acquired in 2014. The available launch reporting associated Panda TV with Shanghai Panda Entertainment Culture Co. and Wang Sicong.

Who founded or ran Panda TV?

Wang Sicong was identified in contemporary reporting as Panda TV’s chief executive and a principal investor or executive figure. Reporting also linked the company to Shanghai Panda Entertainment Culture Co.

How large did Panda TV become?

TechNode, citing Jiguang data, reported that Panda TV ranked third among Chinese game-livestreaming platforms by daily active users in December 2018, behind Huya and Douyu. That was a contemporary measurement, not a current statistic.

Why did Panda TV shut down?

Reports point to several interacting causes: an unstable business model, weak internal management, fierce domestic competition, content-rights pressure, a weaker livestreaming market, and failure to secure new funding. TechNode also cited reports of debt exceeding RMB 700 million, but that figure should be treated as reported rather than independently audited here.

The Bottom Line

Panda TV was a real and eventually substantial Chinese game-streaming platform, but it was never a current Amazon-owned Twitch challenger. Announced in 2015, it competed mainly against China’s domestic livestreaming services, reached a reported third-place daily-active-user ranking in late 2018, and closed its content services on March 8, 2019. Its collapse illustrates how audience growth and celebrity backing cannot by themselves overcome expensive streamer competition, rights constraints, management problems, and dependence on continued funding.
