Panchak has a strong comic premise: after a family patriarch dies, his relatives fear that a superstition will claim five more lives unless they perform prescribed rituals. But the film’s comedy, as Nandini Ramnath argues in her Scroll.in review, blunts rather than sharpens its challenge to that belief. It means well, yet does not push its argument with much force.
What is Panchak about?
The story begins with the death of Ananta Khot, who had asked for his body to be donated for medical research instead of being cremated. Ananta and his scientist son, Madhav, reject arcane rituals. The rest of the family, however, fears Panchak: the belief that if someone dies during an inauspicious period, five more family members will die within a year unless particular rites are performed.

Madhav tries to reason with his relatives, while the astrologer Joshi stands to benefit from their anxiety. That setup gives the film a clear target: fear and the customs that exploit it. Yet, in Ramnath’s reading, the film is too mild to make Joshi an unmistakable object of satire.
Does the comedy make its critique effective?
Ramnath’s central reservation is that the film’s tone works against its subject. Its shrillness and slapstick soften a story about a deep-seated tradition, leaving the comedy less incisive than the premise suggests. Madhav’s own attempt to change his family’s thinking also lacks conviction; as Ramnath puts it, “Madhav’s ploy to rid his family of obscurantist thinking is half-hearted too.”

This tension is the film’s defining trade-off. Family farce can make a serious belief approachable, but it can also turn the argument into background noise. In Ramnath’s assessment, Panchak leans toward the latter: it has an idea worth pursuing, but its humor and hesitant protagonist do not carry the challenge forcefully enough. Her concise verdict is that “It means well but mishandles its premise.”
How do setting and performances shape the film?
Directed by Jayant Jathar and Rahul Awate, Panchak is a Marathi-language film set in the Konkan. Ramnath notes that the dialogue reflects the region’s Marathi dialect and that the theatrical release had English subtitles. She also points to the creative idea of bringing Western opera into a Marathi milieu, a musical choice that gives the comedy a distinctive point of contrast.

The review describes the rest of the cast as performing efficiently and singles out Nandita Patkar as Kaveri, a character readily swayed by the family’s fears. The reviewed performers include Dilip Prabhavalkar as Ananta, Adinath Kothare as Madhav, Anand Ingale as Aatma, Nandita Patkar as Kaveri, Satish Alekar as Bal, Bharti Acherkar as Uttara, and Deepti Devi as Veena.
Who is this film likely to suit?
Viewers interested in Marathi family comedy, Konkan-inflected dialogue, or stories built around superstition may find the premise and cultural setting engaging. Those looking for a sharp, sustained social critique should temper expectations: Ramnath’s review sees a satire whose slapstick and mildness dilute its argument. Her assessment is a critical reading, not a measure of audience response.
Rank #3
Ramnath’s review reported an English-subtitled theatrical release in January 2024. That establishes the film’s cinema presentation at the time, but does not confirm where it can be watched now.
