1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYes: a film can be visually beautiful and still invite criticism for the way it represents a community. In his 2018 essay, Haroon Khalid makes that case about Padmaavat, praising its visual beauty and Ranveer Singh’s performance as Alauddin Khilji while arguing that the film magnifies familiar stereotypes of Muslims. That is Khalid’s critical interpretation, not a settled measure of how every viewer experiences the film.
What does Khalid mean by “every stereotype”?
Khalid’s argument is not simply that Padmaavat has a Muslim antagonist. It concerns the moral pattern the film builds around its characters: Khilji and his court are placed against Rajput ruler Ratan Singh and queen Padmavati, whose world is presented as noble and principled. Khalid argues that the contrast makes the Muslim characters stand for appetite and violence while the Rajputs embody virtue.
His sharpest formulation is that the film “puts together every single stereotype of Muslims in India, amplifies it, and presents it as art.” The line belongs to Khalid’s essay and should be read as polemic and interpretation, rather than as an objective description accepted by all critics. The question it raises is concrete: does the film give its Muslim characters the same range of motives and moral complexity it gives its Rajput protagonists?
How does the film’s visual beauty affect that reading?
Visual splendor does not settle the question of representation. Lavish imagery can draw viewers into a film’s world, but it can also make the values embedded in that world feel attractive or inevitable. Khalid’s praise for the film’s visual form sits alongside his criticism of its characterization; the two judgments are not contradictory.

The distinction matters especially in the climax. A scene may be composed with grandeur and still be troubling in what it asks viewers to admire, mourn, or accept. In a 2018 opinion essay, The Washington Post critic questioned whether the jauhar sequence’s beauty gives it a potentially celebratory force, and challenged the association of sexual violence with dishonor. That is an argument about the scene’s framing, not a neutral finding about how every viewer reads it.
What is at stake in the film’s treatment of women?
Khalid connects the film’s gender politics to its community contrast. Padmavati’s final act of jauhar is framed as liberation, while Khilji’s wife is shown as oppressed. The contrast can make one woman’s extreme choice appear noble while reducing another woman’s experience to evidence of the antagonist’s cruelty.

That critique does not mean the film endorses every practice it depicts. Nor does a disclaimer decide what the imagery communicates. The National’s 2018 critics’ debate records differing views, including praise for the film’s Rajput nobility and valor and concern about portrayals of Muslim characters and women. The disagreement is over how the story and its images work, not merely what the filmmakers say they intended.
What is fiction, and what can be claimed as history?
The film’s disclaimer, reproduced in the Supreme Court record, says Padmaavat is inspired by Malik Muhammad Jayasi’s epic poem Padmavat, which it calls fiction. It disclaims historical accuracy for names, events, places, language, costumes, dance, and other details. A second disclaimer says the film does not intend to encourage or support sati. The record also describes certification by the Central Board of Film Certification after modifications and state exhibition bans that were challenged. These statements establish the film’s declared framing and regulatory history; they do not determine whether its imagery reinforces stereotypes or romanticizes a practice.

Historian Baijayanti Roy distinguishes the historical Alauddin Khilji, who ruled from 1296 to 1316, from Padmavati, whom Roy says is not mentioned in historical sources. Roy describes Padmavati’s story as a legend later treated as history and used for political mobilization. Her scholarly reading of the film identifies a Manichean opposition between evil Muslims and noble Rajputs. This is Roy’s analysis, not a complete account of medieval history.

In a 2023 essay, Anustup Basu situates Padmaavat amid contemporary Hindu pride and Islamophobia. He argues that the film uses ethnological stereotyping—presenting a community through simplified, supposedly characteristic traits—and an Orientalist contrast between a splendid Hindu past and a dark period of Islamic rule. These terms describe Basu’s interpretation of the film’s historical imagination; they should not be mistaken for a claim that all viewers or critics share it.

Across these readings, the central issue is not whether the film is beautiful or whether it has a disclaimer. It is how its character contrasts, spectacle, and treatment of women guide the viewer’s sympathies—and whether the result gives Muslim figures less individuality than their Rajput counterparts. The cited critics and scholars offer distinct interpretations, not evidence that every viewer responds in the same way.
