It is a buoyant family outing rather than a return to the distinctive comic style of the first two films.
Is Paddington in Peru good?
Yes, if you’re looking for a kind-hearted family adventure led by a reliably appealing bear. The film gives Paddington and the Brown family a new setting and a missing-person mystery, while keeping the good manners and earnestness that make the character work. The trade-off is that the larger adventure does not always have the same carefully shaped comic spirit as the earlier films.

That distinction is also at the center of Associated Press film writer Jake Coyle’s review, published February 11, 2025. Coyle writes that director Dougal Wilson “can’t quite summon the same comic spirit” as Paul King, who directed the first two films. He also finds the bear’s “bedrock earnestness and unflaggingly good manners” charmingly intact. That is one critic’s assessment, not a measure of critical consensus.
What is the story?
According to Sony’s synopsis, Paddington learns that Aunt Lucy is missing from the Home for Retired Bears. He travels to Peru with the Brown family and follows a clue on a map into an adventure in the Amazon rainforest. The story shifts the series from its familiar London setting toward a journey centered on family, discovery and the search for Aunt Lucy.
#1 Best Overall
- Paddington, the marmalade-loving bear gets lost in the jungle on an exciting, high-stakes adventure when he returns to visit his Aunt Lucy. With the Brown Family in tow, a thrilling journey ensues when a mystery plunges them into an unexpected escapade through the Amazon rainforest and up to the mountain peaks of Peru.
The film is directed by Dougal Wilson. Its screenplay is credited to Mark Burton, Jon Foster and James Lamont, with a story by Paul King, Simon Farnaby and Burton. King’s story credit preserves a connection to the earlier films even as Wilson takes over directing.
Does the change of director work?
The film’s most noticeable change is not Paddington himself but the way the adventure is presented. The first two movies were directed by King; here, Wilson takes the reins and the story travels much farther from the Browns’ everyday London life. Coyle’s comparison points to what some returning viewers may miss: King’s comic sensibility and stylized visual approach.

But the shift does not erase the series’ central appeal. Paddington remains sincere, considerate and optimistic, qualities that can anchor the film even when its comedy feels less distinctive. If your favorite part of the earlier films was their particular visual wit, this may feel like a step down; if it was the bear’s warmth and the family around him, the new setting still offers familiar pleasures.
Who is in the cast?
The credited cast includes Ben Whishaw as the voice of Paddington, Hugh Bonneville, Emily Mortimer, Olivia Colman and Antonio Banderas. The official credits confirm Banderas’s appearance, but the sources cited here do not establish details about his character. The title’s reference to singing nuns likewise should not be taken as a guide to specific scenes or plot turns.

Was it filmed in Peru?
Yes. Peruvian tourism and film-promotion sources document production in Lima and Cusco, including Machu Picchu National Archaeological Park, the town of Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu. That confirms real Peruvian filming locations, but it does not mean every place shown in the story was filmed on location there.
