Killed by the woke mind virus.” The death language was figurative: Wilson is alive and later spoke publicly about the dispute. She rejected Musk’s account, saying he was not tricked and knew the treatment’s side effects.
What Musk said in the Jordan Peterson interview
Musk made the remarks in an interview with Jordan Peterson published by The Daily Wire in July 2024. The Washington Post reported that Musk said he had been “tricked” into approving care for Wilson when she was 16, and that he had “lost” his child. He also described gender-affirming treatments, including puberty blockers, as “child mutilation and sterilization,” and called allowing young people to change their gender identity “incredibly evil.” Those are Musk’s characterizations, not neutral medical terms. The Washington Post’s July 2024 account covered the interview and the response that followed.
When Musk said, “So my son Xavier is dead. Killed by the woke mind virus,” he was speaking rhetorically about estrangement and Wilson’s transition—not reporting a literal death. Wilson later gave a public interview, and her response makes that distinction clear.
How Vivian Wilson responded
Wilson challenged Musk’s account in posts on Threads and in her first interview with NBC News. She called his account of her childhood “entirely fake” and directly disputed that he had been misled: “He was not by any means tricked. He knew the full side effects.” She also described her experience with puberty blockers positively: “They definitely allowed me to thrive.” Mediaite’s July 2024 report reproduced those remarks from the NBC interview.

The accounts conflict. The reporting establishes what Musk and Wilson said; it does not independently establish every detail of the consent process or resolve their competing descriptions.
The estrangement predates the 2024 remarks
Wilson’s public break with Musk was not first announced in response to the Peterson interview. In April 2022, she filed a petition in California Superior Court to change her name. As quoted by The Washington Post, the petition stated: “I no longer live with or wish to be related to my biological father in any way, shape or form.” That filing came more than two years before Musk’s July 2024 comments. The Washington Post reported the petition and its timing.

What later reporting says about consent
In August 2025, The Daily Beast reported that Wilson revisited the dispute on a podcast. She said Musk’s criticisms began before the 2024 interview and rejected the suggestion that she caused his political shift. Asked whether Musk had to approve access to puberty blockers, Wilson said, “He did. I can’t tell the story of how that happened. That’s one of the greatest mysteries of our time.” The Daily Beast’s August 2025 report records that later comment.
Her statement indicates that approval was required, but does not explain how it was obtained. The accounts available in these reports therefore leave the mechanics unsettled; they do not resolve whether Musk was misled.

What the reported medical context does—and does not—establish
The Washington Post’s July 2024 report described puberty blockers as medications that prevent the release of sex hormones; after a patient stops taking them, the body resumes producing its natal hormones. Physicians who treat transgender patients told the newspaper that puberty blockers alone do not cause infertility. The report also noted that outcomes can depend on factors including when treatment begins, whether a patient later takes cross-sex hormones, and treatment duration.
This is contemporaneous context reported in July 2024, not a complete current clinical review or evidence about Wilson’s individual medical outcome. It does not support presenting Musk’s phrase “sterilization drugs” as an established medical description.
