Isak returns home after seven years in prison, gravely ill, while Solomon sees Han Geum-ja’s wartime memories as a way to challenge a hotel project. Isak’s final hours bring the episode’s two timelines into uneasy conversation: one centered on family and survival, the other on turning painful history into leverage.
What happens in “How We Fight Back”?
The 1945 storyline begins with children playing at war and news that another man will not return from the front. Noa tries to reassure Mozasu that God is watching over them. Then Isak stumbles into the family home, saying, “I’ve come back… I’m home.” After seven years in captivity, he is weak, bruised and struggling to breathe. His return is a reunion, but not a rescue.
Sunja searches for a doctor, only to find that wartime conditions have made medical help scarce. She turns to Koh Hansu, who agrees to arrange care on the condition that she take the boys to the countryside, away from the city ahead of expected bombing. Sunja accepts because Isak needs help, despite her distrust of Hansu.
While Isak waits, Mozasu tells him he wants to be rich enough to buy better care and a larger home for the family. Isak says that being loved is true wealth. Mozasu’s reply—that he wants love and money—makes the reunion feel tender without pretending the years apart have erased the family’s hardships.

Why does Isak forgive Pastor Hu?
Isak asks Noa to bring Pastor Hu to see him. He confronts the pastor about whether he informed the police about him. Pastor Hu admits that he did: he resented Isak’s growing influence and feared losing his own standing in the church.
Noa is devastated by the confession and cannot accept the betrayal as easily as his father does. Isak forgives Pastor Hu. He then tells his sons, “No matter what, you are my sons, and I am your father.” The moment gives Isak a chance to affirm his bond with them, even as the truth deepens Noa’s hurt.

What happens to Isak?
The doctor Hansu arranges examines Isak and says he has sepsis and only hours to live. The episode’s account of his condition makes his death the consequence of grave illness after imprisonment, rather than a sudden turn unrelated to his return.
In their final conversation, Isak tells Sunja, “I am dying to live.” She promises that their children will lead good lives and thrive. After Isak dies, his coffin is carried to a furnace. An air-raid siren sounds, sending people toward shelters, but Sunja cannot make herself leave her husband. “I can’t leave my husband,” she cries as the coffin burns.

What is Solomon’s plan for Han Geum-ja’s land?
In 1989, Solomon approaches Abe-san after Abe receives a business award, ostensibly to ask for mercy. Abe refuses to relent. Solomon later visits Han Geum-ja, whom he calls Halmoni, and tells her that his choices have left him fired and stuck in Japan.
Geum-ja recalls that after the war, people did not want the land because of its association with a military school and trucks carrying corpses. Solomon sees a possible way to stop the hotel investors: if bodies remain buried on the property, the development could be put at risk. Geum-ja resists reopening the past, saying she had to forget in order to live there.

Filmibee’s 2024 recap reports that Geum-ja sells the land for 1.4 billion yen. In the episode’s conflict, Solomon’s proposed tactic is not simply about exposing history; he wants to derail the hotel project and make Abe understand that Solomon holds him responsible.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does “This is how we fight back” mean?
The phrase captures Solomon’s willingness to turn buried wartime history into a weapon against the hotel development. For Geum-ja, those memories are something she has tried to live beyond, not a resource to reopen. The disagreement gives the plan a human cost: what Solomon sees as leverage is, to her, a return to painful history.

The episode sets that strategy against Sunja’s response to loss. As she refuses to leave Isak’s coffin even with the air-raid siren sounding, her resistance is rooted in devotion and responsibility to her family. The two timelines offer contrasting forms of endurance: Solomon seeks to make the past obstruct the powerful, while Sunja faces the immediate demands of grief and survival.
