Yes. On January 20, 1982, Ozzy Osbourne bit a bat thrown onto the stage during a concert in Des Moines, Iowa. He said he mistook it for a rubber toy—one of the objects audiences had thrown onstage before—and realized it was real only after biting it. The bat’s condition is disputed: the teenager who threw it reportedly said it was dead, while Osbourne’s later account and a doctor’s statement describe it as alive after the bite.

What happened in Des Moines?

During a Diary of a Madman tour stop at Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines on January 20, 1982, a bat was thrown onto the stage. Osbourne bit it, then discovered it was a real animal rather than a rubber prop. He was taken to hospital for rabies shots. Contemporary accounts place the episode at the auditorium; later reporting identifies the person who threw the bat as local teenager Mark Neal, then 17. History of the incident and Axios’s account

Why did Ozzy Osbourne bite the bat?

Osbourne said he thought the bat was one of the fake rubber objects people had thrown onstage. He had bitten rubber props before, so, in his telling, he treated this one as another stage object until he realized it was real. In a 1982 interview, he put it this way: “Somebody threw a live bat on stage, and I thought it was one of those fake things, you know.” Georgia Straight’s 1982 interview; The Washington Post’s later account

Was the bat alive or dead?

The accounts distinguish the bat’s condition when it was thrown from what happened after Osbourne bit it. Axios reports that Neal said the bat was dead when he threw it. Osbourne’s memoir, as quoted in later coverage, recounts its head twitching in his mouth; in that account, a doctor told Sharon Osbourne the bat was alive when examined. Neal’s reported claim does not establish the animal’s condition at the later examination, and the later account does not resolve what Neal believed or observed when he threw it. No. The bat episode happened at the 1982 Des Moines concert. The dove incident occurred earlier at a CBS Records meeting and is a separate episode; later reporting notes that it appears to have been filmed. The Washington Post’s account
