In Babygirl, Harris Dickinson’s Samuel dances to George Michael’s “Father Figure” while Nicole Kidman’s Romy watches. The scene was scripted, but Dickinson says it was not choreographed.
What happens in the “Father Figure” scene?
Samuel performs as Romy watches from her seat. The moment is intimate and deliberately hard to categorize: it can read as seductive, awkward or playful, but those are interpretations of the scene rather than facts about how it was made.
Babygirl is Halina Reijn’s 2024 film. A24 describes its story as one in which a high-powered CEO risks her career and family when she begins an affair with her much younger intern. Samuel and Romy’s unequal positions inform the tension of the dance without reducing it to a straightforward seduction.
Was the dance choreographed or improvised?
Dickinson told Vogue that the scene was in the script but had no choreography. He received the song well ahead of filming; the direction said Samuel “moves through the space.” With Romy seated, Dickinson wanted the dance to feel as though Samuel was doing it for himself as well as for her. That account means it should not be described as wholly improvised: the scene was scripted, while the movement was not choreographed.

In a separate interview, Dickinson described looking for a balance between a silly performance and a lap dance, with Samuel remaining somewhat unsure of what the moment should be. That uncertainty helps explain why the dance can feel both comic and charged rather than polished or conventionally seductive.
Who is in Babygirl, and how long is the film?
Kidman plays Romy and Dickinson plays Samuel. The Associated Press lists the film’s runtime as 114 minutes and reports an R rating for strong sexual content, nudity and language. These details apply to the film as a whole, not just the dance scene. The Associated Press review also provides plot context.
