If your YouTube Live broadcast has no sound, first check whether your encoder is actually sending audio, then diagnose the Owncast and YouTube paths separately. Owncast’s documentation covers sending a stream to Owncast; it does not establish that Owncast is forwarding your stream to YouTube. The right fix depends on whether your encoder sends to YouTube directly, sends to Owncast, or uses another route.
1. Check the encoder and audio source first
Start at the point where audio enters the broadcast. In OBS or your encoder, confirm that the intended microphone, desktop audio, or other source is selected and that its meter moves while sound is present. Check the encoder’s own preview or monitoring path as well.
- Play or speak into the source you expect viewers to hear and watch its meter.
- Check that the source is routed to the audio track or output used by the broadcast.
- Make a local recording using the same scene and audio routing, then play it back. If the recording is silent, the problem is upstream of the destination platforms.
- Review encoder errors and CPU load. YouTube recommends checking the encoder’s sound, routed sources, errors, CPU load, and local archive; if encoder output is healthy, investigate the outbound connection. YouTube’s live-streaming troubleshooting guidance explains this diagnostic approach.
Do this before changing codecs or buying equipment: silence in the encoder preview or local recording points to source selection, routing, or encoder configuration, not a YouTube playback setting.
2. Confirm how Owncast and YouTube are connected
Identify the actual path before applying platform-specific fixes. Owncast’s OBS guide describes configuring OBS to send to an Owncast RTMP destination with an endpoint and matching stream key. YouTube separately documents encoder ingest. Those facts do not show that Owncast is forwarding your stream to YouTube.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- OBS sends directly to YouTube: diagnose the YouTube output and its audio settings.
- OBS sends to Owncast: confirm the Owncast ingest has audio, then determine what separate process or service, if any, creates the YouTube output.
- Separate outputs or a restreaming service: compare the audio source, track routing, and settings for each output. Do not assume one output’s healthy meters prove another output is configured correctly.
For an Owncast destination, follow the Owncast streaming instructions and confirm the custom RTMP service uses the Owncast endpoint and the matching stream key. Owncast recommends H.264 video and AAC audio for compatibility. Do not replace a YouTube stream key with an Owncast key: they belong to different destinations.
3. Check YouTube’s audio ingest settings and errors
If the encoder sends to YouTube, inspect the YouTube Live Control Room diagnostics while the encoder is running. YouTube’s supported audio codecs for RTMP/RTMPS ingest are AAC and MP3. For stereo, YouTube documents a recommendation of 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. It also calls for one audio stream. These are YouTube’s published settings, not evidence that your current output uses them.

| What to check | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Audio enabled | The encoder output has audio turned on; some encoders have an audio on/off option. |
| Audio stream count | Send one audio stream, rather than multiple streams. |
| Codec | Use AAC or MP3 for YouTube RTMP/RTMPS ingest. |
| Stereo settings | Compare against YouTube’s documented stereo recommendation: 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. |
| Source and track | The intended microphone, desktop, or other source is assigned to the audio track actually sent to YouTube. |
YouTube’s error guide includes the message “Your encoder is sending no audio.” It also identifies multiple audio streams, unsupported codecs, incorrect sample rates, and bitrate warnings as possible ingestion problems. Use the specific Live Control Room error to guide the correction rather than changing unrelated settings. See YouTube’s live-streaming error messages.
4. Understand Owncast audio passthrough
Owncast says it passes audio through untouched by default. Consequently, if the incoming audio is absent or faulty, passthrough does not repair it. When passthrough is disabled for an output variant, Owncast re-encodes that variant’s audio to AAC. These behaviors apply to an Owncast-served path; they do not prove your YouTube output passes through Owncast. Details are in Owncast’s technical documentation.

Owncast’s FFmpeg example specifies AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. Treat that as the documented example, not a universal requirement for every Owncast setup. For compatibility, the Owncast recommendation is AAC. See the Owncast FFmpeg guide.
5. Use Owncast monitoring for the Owncast playback path
If Owncast viewers also hear silence, inspect Owncast’s Stream Performance page for supported-player playback metrics and errors. The hardware page provides CPU, memory, and disk context. These observations can help distinguish an Owncast playback issue from an upstream source problem, but they cannot by themselves establish what YouTube received. The relevant admin monitoring details are in Owncast’s technical documentation.

6. Troubleshoot by symptom
- The encoder meter does not move: select the intended source, check its mute state and input, and confirm it is assigned to the broadcast track.
- The meter moves, but the local recording is silent: check encoder track routing and recording/output audio configuration; the destination platform has not yet been isolated as the cause.
- The local recording has sound, but YouTube reports no audio: check that audio is enabled on the YouTube output and that the output has exactly one audio stream.
- YouTube reports an unsupported codec or sample rate: use AAC or MP3 and compare the sample rate with YouTube’s indicated requirement; for stereo, its published recommendation is 44.1 kHz.
- YouTube reports multiple audio streams: configure the output to send one audio stream.
- Owncast playback is silent, but YouTube has sound: investigate the Owncast input and playback path separately; the two destinations may not share the same output or settings.
- Owncast playback has sound, but YouTube is silent: verify the separate YouTube output, including its source, track, codec, sample rate, and stream count.
