For a YouTube-only 24/7 stream of recorded videos, sending FFmpeg directly to YouTube is the more direct route. Owncast is a self-hosted streaming destination: broadcast software sends a feed to your Owncast server, where viewers can watch. That makes Owncast useful if you want a separate self-hosted destination, but it is not a drop-in replacement for an encoder that sends prerecorded video to YouTube.

Neither option, by itself, supplies a complete, documented 24/7 playlist-and-recovery setup. You must plan the video loop, supervise the process, test disconnect handling, and decide how to keep an archive. If you want the stream to run without keeping a computer on at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative for looping uploaded videos to YouTube.

Owncast and FFmpeg do different jobs

Question Owncast FFmpeg sent directly to YouTube
What is it? A self-hosted live-streaming service that receives an RTMP broadcast and provides a viewing destination. A software encoder/tool that can send media to a streaming destination such as YouTube.
Where does the feed go? To an Owncast server. Its documented FFmpeg example sends a live camera-and-audio capture to Owncast; it is not a ready-made recorded-file playlist or YouTube command. To YouTube using the YouTube Live server URL and stream key.
What must you operate? A reachable server, Owncast configuration, credentials and stream key, and the broadcasting software. The host running FFmpeg, media and playlist logic, the YouTube stream key, and process supervision.
Best fit You want your own self-hosted viewing destination and are prepared to administer a server. YouTube is the destination and you are comfortable maintaining the encoder command, playlist, and recovery process.

The services can have different roles in a larger setup, but the official documentation cited here does not establish a turnkey Owncast-to-YouTube relay, dual-output configuration, or playlist scheduler. If you want to serve both destinations, treat them as separate outputs that need their own configuration and testing.

Choose the route that matches your destination

Choose FFmpeg direct to YouTube when YouTube is enough

YouTube’s encoder workflow asks for its live server URL and stream key in your encoder. For a single YouTube destination, that avoids introducing an Owncast server that does not serve the stated destination. You still need to prepare and loop the recorded-video sources, keep FFmpeg running, and decide how to respond if the process or connection stops.

Choose Owncast when you also want a self-hosted destination

Owncast is relevant when you want to operate a separate viewing service on infrastructure you control. Its documentation describes accepting RTMP broadcasts, and its install guidance covers running Owncast as a service so it stays in the background and starts at boot. You will need a server reachable by broadcasting software and will be responsible for its administration. The documentation does not establish that adding Owncast automatically sends a feed onward to YouTube.

For either route, assess capacity before choosing quality

  • Match resolution and frame rate to the source video, available encoding capacity, and sustained upload bandwidth.
  • Higher resolution and frame rate require more bitrate and encoding capacity; Owncast notes that server and network capabilities differ.
  • Use H.264 video and AAC audio for assured compatibility in the Owncast guidance. Follow YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the direct YouTube output.
  • Do not treat a sample bitrate or encoder preset as a universal requirement. Settings depend on the source, encoder, machine, and connection.

Configure a direct FFmpeg-to-YouTube workflow

The steps below describe the workflow and settings to configure, not a universal command: the correct input and playlist syntax depend on the recordings and operating system. YouTube’s documentation tells you to configure the encoder with YouTube’s server URL and stream key; its encoder-settings guidance recommends RTMPS, the secure RTMP-over-SSL transport.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  1. Prepare the source and playlist. Confirm the recordings play correctly, have the intended audio, and can transition or repeat as you expect. Decide what should happen at the end of each file and when the playlist ends. A process that exits when its input ends is not a 24/7 loop.
  2. Get the YouTube ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and use the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Enter those values in the encoder. Treat the key like a password; do not publish it in scripts, logs, screenshots, or a public repository.
  3. Set encoder output deliberately. Choose a supported resolution and frame rate that your source and machine can sustain, and a bitrate appropriate to YouTube’s current guidance and your available upload bandwidth. Use H.264 video and AAC audio for broad compatibility. For the Owncast guidance’s two-second keyframe interval, FFmpeg’s -g is a frame count: set it to twice the output frame rate (for example, 60 frames at 30 fps). Verify the actual encoder output rather than assuming the source’s frame rate is the output frame rate.
  4. Choose an encoding preset that fits the machine. Owncast’s documented FFmpeg example uses libx264 with the veryfast preset: it uses less CPU but is less compression-efficient than slower presets. That is an example trade-off, not a mandatory YouTube setting. A slower preset may improve compression efficiency but costs more CPU.
  5. Test before relying on it. Send a representative test with motion and audio, check YouTube’s stream health, and watch for dropped frames, buffering, audio problems, or an unexpected end. YouTube explicitly advises testing before starting a live stream.
  6. Supervise the process and connection. Run FFmpeg under a process supervisor or equivalent mechanism that can detect an unexpected exit and restart it. Define how you will handle a network outage, expired or changed stream key, missing media, and playlist exhaustion. Test those failure cases; the cited platform instructions do not prescribe a complete 24/7 supervision configuration.
  7. Plan the archive separately. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that rule guarantees an archive for one uninterrupted stream lasting 24 hours or longer. Check YouTube’s current behavior and consider splitting the broadcast into shorter sessions or keeping a separate recording.

Set up Owncast as a separate destination

  1. Install Owncast on a server you can administer. Its manual-install documentation identifies TCP port 1935 for the default RTMP ingest endpoint and port 8080 for the web interface. Make the necessary ports reachable for your intended setup; expose only what you need.
  2. Secure the installation. Change the default credentials and stream key during setup. Keep the key private and use a secure administrative password.
  3. Configure your broadcasting software to target Owncast. The default ingest uses the server address, the /live/ path, and the stream key. Confirm the exact configured endpoint and credentials in your Owncast setup rather than assuming defaults remain unchanged.
  4. Match the output to the server and network. Owncast recommends H.264 video, AAC audio, and a two-second keyframe interval for compatibility. Higher resolution or frame rate requires more bitrate and encoding capacity. Test the chosen settings on the actual server and connection.
  5. Keep the service running and test recovery. Owncast advises running it as a system service so it can remain in the background and start on boot. That does not by itself supervise the encoder or guarantee recovery from a network or source failure; test those separately.

Owncast’s published FFmpeg example is for capturing a camera and audio input and sending that live capture to an Owncast server. It is not a ready-to-run command for looping recorded files to YouTube. Owncast’s documentation also notes that it is generally compatible with RTMP broadcasting software, while not every application has been tested.

Common 24/7 failure points

Symptom Likely cause What to check
FFmpeg stops when a video ends The input or playlist completed instead of looping or advancing. Test file transitions and end-of-playlist behavior, then configure explicit looping or a playlist manager. Confirm the process remains alive through a full cycle.
YouTube does not receive the encoder feed Wrong server URL or key, an unavailable network path, or a transport/configuration mismatch. Copy the current URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room, check the encoder log and connection, and use RTMPS as YouTube recommends.
Owncast does not receive a broadcast The server is unreachable, the RTMP endpoint or key is incorrect, or the required port is not reachable. Check the configured ingest address and key, firewall/network reachability, and Owncast’s RTMP endpoint configuration.
Stream health degrades during motion Bitrate, upload capacity, or encoding resources may not sustain the selected output. Test representative motion and audio; lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if needed, and verify available encoding and upload capacity.
The broadcast ends after a disconnect The encoder or network process exited and no tested recovery path restarted it. Use process supervision, inspect logs, and test restart behavior after deliberately interrupting the connection.
No archive is available for a full-day stream The automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed single 24-hour session. Check YouTube’s current archive behavior; split streams or keep a separate recording if retaining the video matters.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube-only 24/7 stream of uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining your own always-on computer or server: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera or send to other platforms.
