Outlander Season 7, Episode 9 is officially titled “Unfinished Business.” In the November 22, 2024 midseason premiere, Jamie, Claire, and Young Ian return to Lallybroch; Jamie tries to make amends with Laoghaire; Claire decides to reveal the truth about her origins and future knowledge; and Roger and Buck continue searching for Jemmy in the past.
What happens in “Unfinished Business”?
After returning Simon Fraser’s body to his homeland, Jamie, Claire, and Young Ian arrive at Lallybroch. Their homecoming brings Ian back into contact with family, while Jamie and Claire face unfinished matters of their own. At the same time, Roger and Buck’s search for Jemmy continues in another period.
The episode’s title phrase, “Some Things Can’t Be Mended,” captures a central tension: making an effort to repair harm can matter, even when it cannot reverse what happened.
Why does Jamie want to see Laoghaire?
Jamie asks Claire’s permission to visit Laoghaire, his former wife, and apologize for the harm in their marriage. In TVLine’s recap, Jamie explains that he wants to mend things; Claire answers that some things cannot be mended, while recognizing that it was good he tried. That exchange is reported recap material, not a verified transcript.

The moment is less a promise of reconciliation than an acknowledgment of limits. Jamie can take responsibility and attempt to make amends, but an apology cannot undo the past or guarantee forgiveness.
Why does Claire decide to tell the family her secret?
Claire has her own unresolved work to do at Lallybroch. She decides to tell the family the truth about where she comes from and what she knows about the future. TVLine’s recap says she believes her knowledge about France could save lives, including Michael’s.

Her choice shifts the stakes from private secrecy to possible protection of others. Disclosure may change how her family understands her, but keeping the information to herself could carry consequences too.
What is happening with Roger, Buck, and Jemmy?
Roger and Buck continue searching for Jemmy in the past. Their storyline runs alongside the return to Lallybroch rather than replacing it: while Jamie, Claire, and Ian confront family ties in Scotland, Roger and Buck are trying to find a missing child across time. STARZ’s official synopsis confirms this search as one of the episode’s principal threads.

The assignment phrase “Some Things Can’t Be Mended” is not the title in STARZ’s listing; the episode is officially called “Unfinished Business.” The two phrases point to related ideas. Jamie’s attempt to apologize shows that facing past harm is worthwhile, even if it cannot restore a relationship to what it was. Claire’s decision to reveal her secret and Roger and Buck’s search for Jemmy show other forms of unfinished business—choices and responsibilities that remain active in the present, or across time.
