Why does Ellen leave Malcolm?
Ellen’s agreement to marry Malcolm rested on Brian being left unharmed. After assassins attack Brian and Murtagh, a survivor reveals that Colum ordered the attack. Ellen regards that betrayal as breaking the bargain and chooses Brian instead. The finale’s official listing describes Ellen preparing for her wedding while Julia attempts to escape; the episode is titled “Something Borrowed.” STARZ’s Season 1 episode listing identifies it as episode 10, with a runtime of 1 hour 26 minutes.
Did Brian kill Malcolm?
Yes. As Ellen and Brian try to escape, Malcolm—drunk and angry—blocks their way. Brian first tries to get him to stand aside, but the confrontation turns into a struggle and Brian kills him. Ellen and Brian get away, but the escape is not a clean romantic resolution: Malcolm’s death creates a serious consequence for them, while their departure also breaks the agreement binding the clans. Who gets married at the end?
The bride is Maura Grant, not Ellen, and the groom is Dougal MacKenzie. The apparent wedding continues the clan arrangement after Ellen disappears: Dougal and Maura’s marriage is a political substitute for the abandoned match, rather than Ellen’s wedding going ahead. Did Julia and Henry go through the stones?
The season does not confirm that either of them crossed. Julia’s escape relies on Davina delaying the household’s response while Julia leaves with Henry and their son William. They evade Lord Lovat’s household, but Arch Bug follows them to Craigh na Dun. Henry worries William may not be able to travel through the stones, so he puts Julia’s hand on them first. The final image leaves the crossing—and whether Henry or William follows—unanswered. TV Insider’s interview with Hermione Corfield reports her comment that the scene would make sense when Season 2 began; that is a tease about later storytelling, not an answer supplied by this finale.

Ellen and Brian end the season together, but their choice carries an immediate personal and political cost: Brian has killed Malcolm, and they have left the marriage arrangement behind. Julia and Henry’s story stops at the threshold of time travel, with the family’s outcome deliberately withheld. The finale resolves Ellen’s choice more clearly than it resolves Julia’s escape.
