Spoilers for Season 1, Episode 2, “S.W.A.K. (Sealed With A Kiss).” Henry and Julia first find each other through letters during World War I; after they are thrown into the past and separated, letters become their way of holding on to the possibility of reunion.
How Henry and Julia meet through letters
The episode opens with Henry Beauchamp on the Western Front during the 1917 Battle of Passchendaele. After a traumatic battlefield experience, he writes an open letter. It reaches Julia Moriston, who works in London’s wartime censorship office, and she answers him.
The correspondence gives each of them a connection beyond the pressures of war. Their exchanges grow more personal, eventually bringing them together in person. Their relationship develops into a romance, and they marry.
Why Henry and Julia are separated
The story shifts from their wartime life to their displacement in the past. Julia arrives at Craigh na Dun without Henry; he comes through later, leaving them in different circumstances and unable to reunite immediately.
