Earlier, Gibbs and Lala nearly kiss at her pool, but the moment breaks when Gibbs admits he gave his rifle to Lara. The episode ends with Lala unconscious and bloodied after a car crash. Present-day Gibbs, narrated by Mark Harmon, speaks of his enduring love for her; the episode does not show whether she will survive.
What did the stars and creators say about the cliffhanger?
David J. North left the question open
Speaking to TheWrap on April 28, 2025, co-creator and co-showrunner David J. North said the series had aimed to “take big swings” and that “there’s more to the story.” Asked directly whether Lala was dead, he said viewers would need to tune in to Season 2. That was an intentional cliffhanger, not confirmation of her death.

In a TVLine interview published the same day, North said he would not officially say Lala was dead, explaining that the writers wanted “wiggle room” to take big swings and do what they felt was right. These comments described the uncertainty at the time of the finale, before the next season answered it.
Mariel Molino explained Lala’s immediate intention
Molino, who plays Lala, told TheWrap that the heartbreaking part of the ending was that Lala never got to tell Gibbs she loved him: “That’s what she’s on her way to tell him.” Her comment underscores why the crash lands as an emotional cliffhanger as well as a threat to Lala’s life.
Gina Lucita Monreal explained the choice of a car crash
Co-creator and co-showrunner Gina Lucita Monreal told TVLine that the writers chose a car accident rather than a line-of-duty incident because it felt more relatable and universal. She said Lala’s fate would send shock waves through the people around her either way. Her remarks, like North’s, came before Season 2 resolved the question.

The premiere’s reveal is the answer to the cliffhanger; the finale’s original ambiguity should not be mistaken for the show’s current story.
