Directed by Cecilia Paulsson and Anders Nilsson, Outgrow the System is a Swedish documentary released in 2023. It takes up the climate movement’s call to “Change the system, not the climate” and asks what kind of economic system could meet human needs while respecting ecological limits. Degrowth
Participants present degrowth as a challenge to economies’ reliance on continual growth. In the film’s framing, high-income economies need to reduce their material footprint toward sustainable levels. This is an approach the documentary explores, not a position that every economist shares.
Economic democracy
The documentary examines ways to give people more democratic control over economic decisions, including how firms are governed and owned. More than a choice between capitalism and communism
The film resists reducing economic change to a two-option menu. It also introduces participatory economics, not-for-profit business, the solidarity economy, and community wealth building. These ideas differ in their goals and methods; the documentary does not present them as interchangeable or as one unified program.
