Pizzati’s 2015 first-person account links the story to Menato’s captivity in Egypt and India, and to the later history of Yol camp during the Independence and Partition years. The novel’s publication details and present-day availability are not established in that account.
What is Latin Lovers about?
In his 2015 Scroll.in account, Carlo Pizzati presents Latin Lovers as his great-uncle Ottone Menato’s best-known novel and a fictionalized POW narrative. Its protagonist, Diego Taranto, is a captain in the Italian Alpini mountain corps. Pizzati’s summary follows Diego from capture in North Africa to a brief period in Egypt and then to camps in India, where he repeatedly tries to escape.
The title refers to an exchange near the novel’s end. A Dravidian clerk praises Italians as good people, workers, musicians and singers, and “famed Latin lovers,” before adding that they are “not good fighters.” Pizzati interprets Diego’s continued escape attempts as a refusal to accept that belittling judgment. The dialogue and plot are relayed through Pizzati’s summary; the account does not identify an edition of the novel against which they can be checked.
How does the story connect to Menato’s captivity?
Pizzati describes Menato as a novelist, poet and alpinist who spent six years as a prisoner of war. He says Menato was held briefly at Geneifa in Egypt and spent most of his captivity in Bangalore and Yol in India. The novel draws on that experience, but Diego Taranto is a fictional protagonist: the account presents the book as fiction shaped by captivity, not as a straightforward memoir.

Pizzati recalls Menato recording climbs and altitudes while captive, naming valleys and routes, and returning to Italy and his family after the war. He says Menato received the Cross of War medal and died at 82; his account supplies no dates for those events. These biographical details are family recollections in Pizzati’s article.
What does Pizzati say about Italian POWs in India?
Pizzati situates the novel against the upheaval of the Independence and Partition years. In his account, local people sometimes treated escaping Italian officers as guests rather than enemies. He connects this response to the officers’ rule not to steal food, but to pay for provisions. That detail helps explain how the novel’s escape plot could involve encounters beyond the wire, though Pizzati does not present it as a comprehensive account of local attitudes.

In the novel as Pizzati summarizes it, news that Japanese troops were moving toward Singapore prompts British authorities to transfer officers north to the Young Officers on Leave camp at Yol, near Dharamsala. The account describes Yol as a large camp where POWs could explore and trek in the mountains, and says they helped map elevations. One summit was named “Cima Italia.”
What the account says about the camp
Pizzati gives the Yol property’s area as 770 acres and says 12,000 Italian soldiers were sent there. He also recounts that an Italian officer was shot after refusing to stop singing a Fascist song celebrating the birth of Rome. These are specific historical claims in a single 2015 narrative; they have not been independently corroborated here.

Pizzati also says Italian POW Lido Saltamartini secretly made 2,000 photographs of camp life. He mentions a book made from those images but gives no title or publication details. A letter from Navy officer Raffaello Paganini to his parents appears in the account with the line: “They seemed so beautiful to me, with their colourful clothes that looked like flowers”. Pizzati provides no date or fuller context for the letter.
What happened to Yol after the POW years?
Pizzati’s 2015 account says Yol held 12,000 Muslims travelling to Pakistan from August through October 1947. He says it later served as a refugee camp for Kashmiri migrants from 1949 to 1952, before becoming military barracks. His article places Yol 10 km west of Dharamsala and says the site could still be visited when he wrote. That does not establish current access, visitor arrangements or lodging conditions.
