Variety reported that several notable figures were absent from the 2026 Oscars’ televised In Memoriam, while a separate group appeared on the Academy’s online memorial page but not on TV. The categories are not interchangeable: some names were reported as omitted from the broadcast, others as online-only, and the Academy’s gallery is a separate memorial from the ceremony segment.
Who was reportedly missing from the televised tribute?
In a report published March 16, 2026, Variety said the broadcast did not recognize James Van Der Beek, Eric Dane, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Robert Carradine, June Lockhart, Bud Cort, and Brigitte Bardot. Variety’s list is a report about the TV segment, not an official Academy roster of omissions, and it should not be treated as exhaustive.

There is a specific disagreement about Robert Carradine: Variety placed him among those not recognized on TV, while The Guardian’s March 16 coverage said he appeared in the extended segment. Because the accounts conflict, his broadcast status is unresolved here.
The Guardian also reported broadcast omissions including Dharmendra and Prunella Scales, alongside Brigitte Bardot, Bud Cort, James Van Der Beek, and Eric Dane. Coverage therefore does not present a single uncontested list of everyone left out.

Who appeared online but not on the broadcast?
Variety separately identified George Wendt, Julian McMahon, James Ransone, Danielle Spencer, Loretta Swit, and Demond Wilson as appearing on the Academy website but not in the televised segment. This is the clearest reported distinction between online recognition and broadcast recognition. The names are examples from Variety’s account, not a complete inventory of the online gallery.
The Academy’s official “In Memoriam 2026” page describes its memorial as honoring artists and filmmakers lost between the 2025 and 2026 Oscars. Its online gallery and the ceremony montage are different presentations; appearing in one does not establish appearance in the other.

What did the 2026 TV segment include?
The ceremony’s memorial was expanded, but reporting said it still could not accommodate everyone lost in the preceding year. The Associated Press described the sequence as longer than usual; neither its account nor Variety supplied a count that quantifies the segment’s capacity.
The show also gave several people dedicated stage tributes, distinct from appearances in the montage. ABC’s ceremony recap says Billy Crystal spoke about Rob Reiner, Barbra Streisand remembered Robert Redford with “The Way We Were,” and Rachel McAdams honored Diane Keaton and Catherine O’Hara. The AP also covered the Reiner, Redford, and Keaton tributes.

Why were names left out?
Available coverage supports a general explanation: the segment was enlarged, yet the number of notable deaths exceeded what the broadcast could include. The reviewed reports do not establish an official selection rule or an Academy explanation for any individual’s absence. Speculation about a particular person’s omission should not be mistaken for a confirmed reason.
A missing name from the TV sequence is not a definitive measure of a person’s importance or career. The broadcast, dedicated stage tributes, and Academy’s online gallery are separate forms of recognition, and the reporting distinguishes them.
