The 2025 Oscars afterparties offered a second red-carpet moment: some guests changed out of their ceremony outfits, while others arrived in looks that played with sheer fabric, dramatic silhouettes and archival fashion. These standouts are chosen for their memorable transformations, distinct design and craftsmanship—not as an objective ranking.
What made the 2025 Oscars afterparty looks stand out?
Much of the documented fashion coverage focused on the Vanity Fair Oscar Party after the 97th Academy Awards on March 2, 2025. For many stars, it was a chance to make a second fashion statement rather than simply continue in their ceremony clothes. Metallics, additional jewelry and more revealing styling appeared among the party choices, according to Vanity Fair’s party coverage.
Sheer and “naked” fashion drew particular attention, but it did not displace traditional formalwear. The Associated Press described both the visibility of sheer dressing and the continued presence of conventional party looks in its report on the afterparty trend.
Standout transformations from ceremony to party
Mikey Madison in Dior
Mikey Madison wore a black-and-pink Dior gown with Tiffany & Co. jewelry for the Oscars ceremony, then changed into a dramatic black Dior gown for the party. The contrast made her second appearance feel like a distinct look, not merely an extension of the first. Vanity Fair documented both outfits in its ceremony-to-party fashion feature.

Zoë Saldaña in Saint Laurent
Zoë Saldaña’s second look, designed by Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello, paired a long-sleeve silk-jersey bodysuit with a silk skirt and ruffled train. The combination brought a sleek, close-fitting upper silhouette together with the movement of a formal train, making it one of the evening’s more distinctive changes. Sheer looks and statement-making craftsmanship
Olivia Wilde in Chloé
Olivia Wilde wore a sheer embroidered lace Chloé negligee, a look that fit the evening’s visible interest in transparency while retaining intricate surface detail. The Associated Press included her in its coverage of sheer and “naked” party fashion.

Doja Cat in custom Balmain
Doja Cat’s custom Balmain gown used fringe and hand-threaded glass beads in nine shades of gold. As reported by the Associated Press, the designer said 39 artisans worked on it over 3,450 hours. That figure is the designer’s production account as relayed by AP, not an independent labor study. The gown’s elaborate surface and reported workmanship made it one of the night’s most striking examples of custom party dressing. Read AP’s report.
Kendall Jenner in vintage Mugler
Kendall Jenner wore a vintage 1992 Mugler black lace look made of rubber, according to AP. Its archival provenance and unusual material offered a different kind of impact from a newly commissioned gown: the design’s distinction came from its history as well as its silhouette. British design and archival fashion
British Vogue’s selection highlighted Hunter Schafer in 16Arlington and also singled out looks connected to designers Dilara Findikoglu and Miss Sohee. Those names broadened the party’s fashion picture beyond the biggest familiar houses, showing the place of London and the wider British design scene in the evening’s standout coverage. Archival and custom pieces also made the night’s range especially clear. ELLE credited Jenna Ortega’s look to archival Donna Karan Collection, with Christian Louboutin shoes and Pomellato jewelry. Emily Ratajkowski wore custom Ludovic de Saint Sernin, paired with Jimmy Choo and Briony Raymond. Custom, vintage and ready-to-wear are not interchangeable
Many of the most memorable looks were custom-made, vintage or archival. A celebrity’s designer attribution therefore does not mean an identical outfit is available to buy, and a vintage piece is not the same as a current-season release. For accessible inspiration, a black evening gown can echo the broad formal silhouette of a party look, but it should be understood as an interpretation—not a match for a custom Dior, Saint Laurent or other named design.
The Associated Press quoted Madeline Hirsch, features director at InStyle Fashion, saying that celebrity red-carpet moments help feed the naked-dress trend and that sheer lace was its most prominent expression in 2025. Hirsch also said these looks tend to appear most at afterparties. That is expert commentary on the fashion moment, not a measured survey of how often guests wore sheer clothing. How to read the night’s “best looks”
“Best” is a matter of editorial judgment, not a measurable award. A useful way to compare the evening’s standouts is to consider what each look did particularly well:
- Transformation: Mikey Madison and Zoë Saldaña made their party appearances distinct from their ceremony styling.
- Silhouette and styling: Olivia Wilde’s sheer lace and the contrast between Saldaña’s bodysuit and ruffled train offered different approaches to party dressing.
- Craftsmanship: Doja Cat’s custom Balmain gown stood out for its detailed embellishment and the designer’s reported account of its production.
- Fashion history: Kendall Jenner’s vintage 1992 Mugler look and Jenna Ortega’s archival Donna Karan piece brought earlier designs into the night’s conversation.
