She criticized the host’s closing phrase, “if you were offended,” while recognizing the painful complexity of an incident involving Tourette-related involuntary tics.
What happened at the 2026 BAFTAs?
During the 22 February 2026 BAFTA Film Awards, a racial slur was heard while Sinners actors Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were presenting onstage. BAFTA identified John Davidson, a guest with Tourette syndrome, as the person whose tic was heard. Tourette-related verbal tics are involuntary; they do not establish or express a person’s beliefs.
In comments reported by TheWrap on 23 February, Beachler, Sinners’ production designer, wrote, “I keep trying to write about what happened at the BAFTAs, and I can’t find the words.” She said the slur was heard three times that evening: during the ceremony, directed at her on the way to dinner afterward, and at another Black woman. The additional incidents are Beachler’s account.
Why did Beachler criticize the apology?
Beachler objected to the host’s closing words, “if you were offended,” calling them a “throw away apology.” She wrote, “But what made the situation worse was the throw away apology of ‘if you were offended’ at the end of the show.” The phrase, she argued, made the response conditional rather than directly recognizing the harm experienced by those who heard the slur.

Her remarks also held together the incident’s painful impact and the fact that the word was uttered as an involuntary tic. As TheWrap transcribed her comments, Beachler said: “Of course we were offended… but our frequency, our spiritual vibration is tuned to a higher level than what happened,” and, “I am not steal, this did not bounce off of me, but I exist above it. It can’t take away from who I am as an artist.” TheWrap printed “steal” with “[sic]”; the wording is preserved here as transcribed.
What did BAFTA and the BBC do?
BAFTA’s response
In a statement on 23 February, BAFTA apologized to people affected and said it had warned the audience that involuntary noises or language might occur. It also accepted responsibility for the situation guests faced: “We take full responsibility for putting our guests in a very difficult situation and we apologise to all.” BAFTA said Davidson chose to leave the auditorium during the ceremony.

The BBC’s broadcast response
The BBC separately apologized for failing to edit the slur out before its delayed broadcast. The program was later removed from iPlayer, and the BBC said the slur would be edited out. These were broadcast decisions distinct from the involuntary tic heard at the live event.
What did BAFTA’s later review conclude?
On 10 April 2026, BAFTA’s Board of Trustees published a statement summarizing an independent review by RISE Associates. According to BAFTA’s account, the review found weaknesses in planning, escalation, and crisis coordination. It found no evidence of malicious intent by those delivering the event, and said the available evidence did not support describing the event as evidence of institutional racism. Instead, it concluded that BAFTA’s planning and risk-governance systems had not kept pace with its diversity goals.

How can the involuntary tic and its impact both be acknowledged?
Associated Press reporting on 28 February included perspectives from Black people with Tourette syndrome. Jhónelle Bean, a Black ASL interpreter with Tourette syndrome, put the tension plainly: “Two things can be true at the same time. Just because he ticced that does not mean it was intentional. But then also that still caused hurt or harm for people that heard it.”
Recognizing that a tic is involuntary does not require people affected by the slur to dismiss its impact. Nor should the incident invite discrimination against someone with Tourette syndrome. The tic, the harm experienced by people who heard it, and the choices institutions made about audience preparation, response, and broadcast editing are distinct parts of what happened.
